My CPAP Journey

Post by Bamafanatic » Mon Dec 10, 2007 5:31 pm

Hi everyone...I'm new to the treatment of sleep apnea and will recieve my equipment tommorrow from cpap.com. I'm posting to share my experience with my doctor. I had my sleep study done at a local hospital here and everything went well. I then went to my sleep dr for equipment and having done my research assuming I could have some input on this selection found out that wasn't the case. I told the tech what I wanted and she said they didn't have that item and couldn't supply it but they had another one that was more suited to my needs. She showed me a basic unit and mask and I asked how much $. She proceeded to show me a contract with a price of $1900.00 After I composed my self she assured me insurance would pay and not to worry. Then on the last page she showed me a clause that stated the DME was owned by the Doctor!! and wanted my to sign. She also told me they bought machines by the truck load...what ever they could get a good deal on! Does anyone besides me sense a conflict of interest? I then told her I wanted the dr to write a perscription for me and with lots of discouragement and reluctance on her part she agreed. I went home and ordered everything I wanted for half the price. What a scam!
Just thought I would share and encourage anyone to take an active roll in this treatment. I'm glad I did!!

Steve

Way to go Steve! I'm sure you will be pleased doing it this way. I took a RemStar Pro M series that the ins. bought for me. I was lucky they got me this machine including the HH. I also bought a ResMed S8 Vantage to use and it has been well worth the money. It is so sad when all the Dr.s can think about is money. It should be against some kind of law to have a conflict of interest especially when they try to force their interest on their patients. Hope you have lots of good days ahead with your new therapy. Cheers jim

Ah, if only MORE newbies could find cpaptalk.com FIRST BEFORE they encounter their equipment order. *sigh*

You can look up the items on cpap.com, and compare prices.
That brand makes them show the MSRP, but if you call, they will give you THEIR price.
Please feel free to register so we can get to know you; and help you better.
