Rainout?

Post by MichaelGettel » Sat Nov 17, 2007 4:27 pm

Hi,
I've only been on a CPAP for the last several nights, and I find I am taking to it quite well. I've managed to keep my nasal mask on for at least 7 hours and I know my sleep has improved. My question is: around 5:00 am, my mask usually starts to 'whistle' (which wakes me up). It's at that point I realize the amount of condensation in my mask. Is the moisture causing the sound (it's coming out of the vent, not around my mask)? Beside using a snugglehose (which is on order), can any of you pros assist me? I'm pretty thrilled with my early success, but I'm guessing they'll be hills and valleys....

I also love this website. It has taken me 8 years to finally dial my apnea in, and any support I can find to help me with the therapy is gratefully accepted.

Thanks, Michael

Laws of nature must be followed. To stop rainout, you have to lower the supply of water, (Turn down the HH temp), or warm the room up so the air can hold the moisture. The Heated Hose solves the problem by warming the airstream in the hose. Different types of masks are more likely to have rainout because they run colder. I run mine with the HH turned off, (just passover) I like it cold, room at 65 degrees or lower. Jim

Or, if you must have the heated water (as do I) and if you must have a cold house at night (as does my wife, no heat, 60-63 degrees in winter), then the other option is the heated hose so highly recommended by Rested Gal. I've ordered mine, haven't received it yet. I was fine with a hose cover until the weather started changing, now I'm "sleeping in the rain" again!

I have been using the heated hose for over a year now. I Love it! No rain out and no more frozen nose!

I too went for the heated hose and the only night I had rainout was when I inadvertently forgot to plug it in...it really is worth it.

Can't wait to try mine! Hoping it arrives soon. Wondering how long it takes for an order to arrive from Australia.

I bought the aussie hose and have used it 1 night, it took about 10 days to get it! I had family staying with us lastnight and didn't really check the hose this morning but I didn't feel any water in my mask for the 1st. time...

I purchased the heated hose a year ago and am glad I did. It took 10-14 days to receive it. Fleece lined hoses alone are good but do not prevent rain out this time of year for me. If you like a low night time temp, as I do (60 deg), then I would highly recommend the heated hose.

I haven't tried this but others have... one may want to route the hose under the covers in such a way that your body heat will reduce the rain out.

No heated hose

Keep your machine lower than your bed. Put your hose under the covers. I have a heated water bed, so keep room cool, but I haven't had rainout so far. My humidifier is set at 3.

Rainout happens wherever the hose or mask are cold enough cause the humidity to condense.

At an average pressure of 7.1 (max 8 ), with the hose routed from below the bed level (where I keep the machine) to above my head level,
  • a heated hose,
  • a hose cover
  • and a covering for the mask tube
are all necessary for avoiding rainout.

I'm pretty sure having the hose dangling from a hook above my head contributes to rainout tendencies - but the contribution of this configuration to my comfort is much larger.

heated hose and polar fleece cover

Post by packer » Sun Nov 18, 2007 7:35 am

I am with the posters who like their air warm- and room cool

I found I needed both the aussie hose and a polar cover over it-
also sewed polar fleece over short hose and covered as much of piece that
comes down around nose as possible [ dont cover vent!!]

I had rain with both swift and aura- aura is worst

I also use hanging planter hook [just use an old nylon to tie it up] 18 inches above my head for comfort and
ease of rolling from side to side

aflex 2 inches from floor -- rain not a problem on 3 setting
[also use pur sleep which seems to help keep me sleeping through night]

my advice is to do whatever you need to do to be compliant- that is really the deal here- if it rains you wont use- if too dry and you dont like it - you wont use- if masks leaks you take it off- packer

I have my APAP set at 10-14 cm H2O sitting at about the same level as my mattress, the hose is looped up over the headboard, heated humidifier set at 2, and room temp about 62.

I have no heated hose. I have no hose cover. I have no rainout.

What am I doing wrong???

Wayne

Packer,
I ordered this from Karen (pad-a-cheek) and can't wait to try it. My room is cold by choice, I have the heated hose (for 2 years now) and Karen is also making me short hose cover. With the heated hose I have no rain out but with the cold room I don't like any cold plastic touching me. Let Winter begin,, I'm ready!

BTW...GO PACK!!! If they're in Arizona in January, I'll be there.
