so what was you wierd not listed symptom?

Post by JUSTDAVE2U » Sun Sep 30, 2007 6:36 am

I find that many have other Wierd stuff that goes away with Cpap that no doc in the world would associate with apnea.

mine were.

Speech-I Stuttered, mixed up my words, Said the wrong word or couldn't say hard to Pronounce words.

Ringing ears drove me batty. So bed some times I had to stop what I was doing.

Tingles, twitches and burry feelings. I thought I had MS for a while

all gone with Cpap.

when I think of all those wasted MRI's of my noggin when all I need was a pillow and a fighter pilots mask. Lot.

An interesting comment by my father was that I was much easier to understand over the phone now that I am on the machine

I could never get my point accross/make myself clear, I would also stutter around, I would & still do forget what i'm going to say. LOL, My sister says, "OH, so that's why you never seem to understand what i'm talking about, you've had sleep apnea all your life and have lost several brain cells and in a very sweet manner I might add, so she is very understanding now toward this subject" I had this heart thing going on for 3 or 4 years (rapid heart beat, weakness, felt like blood was rushing down my legs and bad shortness of breath, my whole body would shake/move from my actual heartbeat & I would get real shaky & have to run to get back in bed before I fell down, I haven't had that since i've been on cpap therapy for the past month & a half and my feet used to always feel cold, a little tingly and cold and i've noticed that that is gone now once I hook up to the hose.. That's all I can think of right now, I know there's plenty more though.....

I used to drop things all the time.

I also had MRI's to try to rule out a stroke, but found that I had a minor one a few years ago..I would forget the names of things, stutter, know what I wanted to say, but the right words never made it to my mouth..I thought all of this was related to the stroke, but I am no longer doing any of these things

I used to suffer from migrane headaches alot. At least 5 or 6 times a year. Since I started Paping about 6 years ago I have probably only had 3 or 4 of them in a 6 year span. Is it because of paping or is it just coincidence?

I don't know or care, just happy not to have them much anymore. I count my blessings all the time.

Not since cpap

Post by kteague » Sun Sep 30, 2007 5:10 pm

One thing that comes to mind is the silly nonsensical dreams I had for several years before being diagnosed (was suspected but not proven for years). I have a collection I was journaling. All had to do with something or someone and their mouth or their breathing.

Some examples: drowned puppy was revived; hostage had mouth stuffed with sock and duct taped till police rescued her; robber put gun to victim's chest and said "don't try anything or you'll take your last breath"; popped huge marble sized blackhead from side of nose and left gaping hole into the airway ... you get the idea. Think I have over 40 logged. Near they end they became death dreams, no more happy endings. Once I got on cpap and my therapy finally became effective and my pressure raised, no more dreams about breathing.

That's wild. I recently remembered this one recurring dream I had as a kid. I was congested in the dream, and rivers of mucus just poured out (yuck, I know). I was drowning in it. It was such a weird dream and I had it many times. I don't remember any other dream I had as a kid. I had my tonsils out, but pretty sure I still had this dream after that. What I realized very recently is that I must have had OSA back then. I sure did sleepwalk a lot, too.

I've been on CPAP since the beginning of February and have had modest improvement in energy, alertness, and so forth. Wednesday, my day off, my work called me to tell me that I had received an award for perfect attendance in 2007. I have never had perfect attendence in anything before this, and in thinking back over the year, the couple of severe colds that I have every year just didn't happen this year. Funny how you don't notice some of the effects until someone points it out to you.

Had the following:

Severe Headaches 3-4 times a week, thought it was due to stress or sinus problems. No more problems until about a week ago when I took off my mask in my sleep, and slept for about 3 hours without it, until my wife realized I was snoring. I woke up with a headache, and joked to my wife, that I'd killed a few brain cells with oxygen deprivation (she didn't think that was funny).

Congestiona regular problem, haven't had that since I started CPAP.

Dozing well driving Glad this one has cleared up. My wife would kill me if she knew I'd been experiencing this problem.

Slurring of words, use of wrong word, or loss of my train of thought, I began to think that this was just old age creeping up, and had a hidden fear that it might be the beginning stages of Alzheimer's, but convinced myself that it was probably stress related. I work two high-pressure jobs, 60-80 hours per week, supervise a lot of people, and have a lot on my mind. However, things are beginning to clear up.

Since I turned 30, it's amazing the amount of information I have no recollection of (i.e. field trips when my daughters were younger, a cat we once had, etc.) If my wife and daughters didn't have pictures to prove some of these things, I'd think they were out to convince me I was losing my mind. Then I discovered, this is one affect of apnea, and in just a short time, I've already seen my memory improve dramatically.

Cold and clammy when I was sleeping, my wife thought this was me, and just put up with it over the years, but she says I'm now warm to the touch since CPAP. The doctor says this is a sign of oxygen deprivation. So, I'm glad that this "little" problem has turned around.

I used to have dreams that I was smothering in a fire or jump out of bed thinking that my throat had closed and I could not swallow. I have UARS and never snored.

I also could never watch a movie with my family - or even a 1 hour tv show at night without falling asleep.

The above symptoms prompted my sleep doc to have a sleep study, and the rest is cpap!

Those issues have gone away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was never a good long-distance driver - and still am not - wish that would have gotten better. But I'm very happy and feel so much better on cpap treatment!

After almost 2 months:

* "fuzzy brain" cleared up
* sleeping better
* don't feel like charred toast by Friday
* feel well enough to enjoy the weekends
* no more morning headaches

and most important .... my cat doesn't stand on my chest and sneeze in my face anymore to wake me up to fix breakfast!

Besides all the above:
1. My rosacea is almost invisible ... I'm wearing a red shirt today for the first time in years!
2. My gums (red from mouth breathing my whole life) are now a much more normal color, though less so now that I have a FF mask.

and the weirdest ...

3. My singing voice came back!

I'd lost my singing voice about the time my SDB symptoms started but never made the connection until it came back.

Oh, and about the same time as that, my blood pressure dropped and I started dropping weight (15 lb. in 2 months, so far) and a few other symptoms unrelated to lack of energy cleared up.

(About the weight, I should mention that I am doing Weight Watchers and doing a fair bit of exercise, but nothing really extreme in terms of diet or exercise. I always had pretty healthy eating habits and was never a couch potato--except when I was asleep of course--which is why my weight gain was so frustrating and why I say I haven't made any extreme changes.)
