Recent Sleepyhead data

Post by sila » Sun Jun 09, 2019 8:15 pm

I'm diagnosed with mild positional sleep apnea, 5.5 AHI. The prescribed pressure settings are 5-15. My apneas are increasing, having gone from a low of under .5 to a high of roughly 12. I feel like hell. Crippling daytime exhaustion and weakness.

I feel constant air hunger on the prescribed low 5 pressure setting. Valium withdrawal completed three months ago with consequent REM rebound increasing apneas. Also small throat airway and thick neck. I feel like the starting pressure needs to be higher. I figured out how to reset my Dreamstation APAP and my uneducated guess is that a 7-15 pressure range would be wiser.

Thanks in advance for your input.

If the pressure of 5 is causing you discomfort (and that's actually very common), the absolutely increase the min pressure. try 7-20, and see (for the most part, the max pressure should just be left at machine max and ignored.

If you're still not comfortable at 7, then bump it up until you are breathing better.

Try increasing that minimum starting pressure from 5 to 7 and see how things go.
At this point...sure worth trying because obviously this isn't working out so great...both in numbers and even more importantly how you feel.

Was the sleep study you had done that gave you the mild diagnosis done in a sleep lab setting or was it a home study?

Thanks, Pugsy!

The sleep study was done at a sleep lab. In my opinion it should have registered more apneas than it did.

lab studies may be the 'gold standard' but they're woefully inadequate, you're in a strange place, all wired up and sleeping weirdly... plus, sleep varies from night to night... and hour to hour.

It's a wonder there's any good data from lab studies at all.

Thank you, palerider!

I just noted your other post.

In my opinion the sleep lab study was just as you say. Wretchedly inaccurate and inadequate. I was stoned on valium to sleep at all. I’m sure that didn’t help.

Best to consider it a ticket to entry, and put it out of your mind, and make adjustments based on your treatment *at home*...

How quickly can I raise minimum pressure on my APAP? 7 clearly isn’t enough. I raised it to 8 then got up to 10 by the end of a frustrating, desperate and largely sleepless night. I’ll go to 8 tonight and hold for a day or two, I guess. Thanks for your support. Feeling stupid about messing with the pressure so much.

Addendum: I just discovered that the hose connecting Dreamstation to SoClean had pulled off the APAP, causing a water leak. I wonder if this could reflect in higher AHI.

Or could using the SoClean at all somehow affects machine pressure by lowering it.

As quickly as you wish.

if you want 10, then set it to 10. There's no reason to wait.

NoClean is crap, they're being sued for false advertising for not telling people they're poisoning them with ozone.

It can cause damage to your machine, and your lungs, and does nothing worthwhile.

Thanks for the links. Wow. This really pisses me off. I’m wondering if my AHI increase is correlated to inhaling ozone. Could also explain why I’ve been feeling short of breath.

If it's not too late, I'd certainly return that piece of junk for a refund.

I think it’s too late to return it. I’ve had it for around six months.
