SleepyHead software development PROPOSAL

Post by A KLERK » Mon Jan 21, 2019 2:18 pm

Just to make you curious: Tomorrow might be the day that something changes in SleepyHead software development...
Please stand-by, fellow developers!

HERE IT IS:
The SleepyHead Devs Discord server has been pretty quiet for the last several months, and in October JediMark posted that he would be unable to work on SH for the foreseeable future. This has left version 1.1 in limbo, with some reported bugs and not much user uptake.

To get SH to a new release, it needs further testing and bug reports, and bug fixing, and updating of the translations. With that goal in mind, Arie Klerk and Pholy (aka pholynyk) call upon programmers, testers and translators to form a Release Committee to oversee the updating and eventual release of a tested and supportable Version 1.1.x of SleepyHead.

You may apply by replying on Discord: https://discord.gg/TaDzuAH, or just go there if already a member of course.

Any ideas what new changes could be made?

As curious as a cat I asked, "What might or might not happen tomorrow?"

I stickied this topic to the top for now so that anyone who might want to help out could see it and maybe help.
Whether you post or not...it's up here for a little while.

My question...just how bad are the bugs right now that haven't been sorted through?

How much of a mess would it be to release it as is now????

Thanks.

The community effort just started today.

I know it has been about six months since I even looked at things. PHoly & Arie are trying to get things organized.
Phil said he has not looked at the code in a while. I thought Mark was working on the Help file text but I am not sure if we have access to any of that.

We hope to make the 1.1 version stable but there will likely still be bugs. Mark started a complete rewrite that resolves many of those issues. IIRC ther is support for more machines in 1.1 too.

We will need much testing with data from a wide variety of machines. I know Arie already has some data collected.

Thanks for the sticky. Pugsy

There is a User chat and a Dev chat Discord forum. Both have been quite dead :(
There are a few of us that can send invites to those interested in helping.

I'm willing to beta test and provide data from my machine if required. Unfortunately I can't offer more than that but I do appreciate this software and will contribute as able.

I'm happy to help with testing and whatever else, again, if desired.

Good to see familiar people back here! Mark is seriously trying to earn money in a steady job. Though he is busy with an entirely new start on SleepyHead, he struggles with decisions on open software versus cooperation with manufacturers... I have made clear to him we only want to make version 1.1.0 bug free, not anything on new versions! And of course I want to update the translations.
The existing bugs are less bad than the gain in speed, so there's a good reason to use 1.1 as interim Version. One can see the advantages of the new database setup already!
I don't see any problems in the use of 1.1, but we want to wait for testers to find problems I didn't see yet.
Mark knows about it, I am in direct contact with him, and agrees that a fork is possible.
So let us do it! CU all @ Discord.

I have been using my own compiled version of a slightly later version than 1.1 that fixes the screen shotting F12

Do you need the help of coding developers, and if so, what programming languages do they need to be fluent in?

The program is written in C++ & the Qt framework. Target OS are Windows, Linux, & MacOS

We could definitely use coding developers. If you want to take a look, the code is at

This is something I'm very interested in. My programmings a bit rusty these days though I have a good understanding of how it works. On the other hand I have a lot of extremely versatile skills in areas like electronics, mechanics, and dealing with technologies in general. I'm a field service engineer by trade so my projects and skills end up meeting the demand of the day every day.
