Canadians shopping on cpap.com

Post by Elle » Fri Feb 02, 2007 6:32 pm

Hi there, are any of you in Canada and have experience shopping for products on this website? I am just wondering whether there is a problem with customs. If it is too much trouble I will shop around in Canada but the prices on this site are so much better. Thanks for any input.

Hi Elle,

I've placed 3 orders with cpap.com and have never been dinged for taxes or duties.

I have purchased from CPAP.Com and have been serviced very well. They read your email promptly, are flexible in their pricing and professional in their actions. I would not hesitate to deal with them.

There is no duty or GST on medical equipment. Just make sure you always request that they put 'medical equipment' on the Customs declaration.
You are right about the pricing. It is significantly less than here in Canada.

While I agree that the prices on cpap.com are really good, I'm less than pleased with their policy of free shipping for folks in the US, and gratuitous shipping charges to send product to Canada.

I've asked about this and was told by cpap.com staff that their shipments to customers in the US go by courier and are picked up at their office whereas to ship to Canada, a cpap.com staff person has to make a trip to the local post office and that this is very expensive for them. I'm underwhelmed by this explanation.

I have stopped making purchases from cpap.com for this reason and, have found other online suppliers in the US who will meet the cpap.com price and DON'T charge the "we have to send someone to the post office" fee even though their shipments come via the US Postal Service.

Thanks so much for the replies. It surprised me that there was not much in canada. I called cpap.com and they told me it would be $17. to ship and she didn't have any information about duty etc. frustrating but hard to beat the prices. A mask cushion here is $35. and it was $125. here. ack

Hi Elle,

First of all, if this is for a Resmed product CPAP dot com may not sell it to you. I know this is true for Resmed machines. I do not know about mask parts or masks.

For a cushion, they will mail it by post office no problem. Have them wite medical supplies. If you have to pay duty. Pay it then fill out the back of the form, (will be attached to the package) and you will get it back.

Does your insurnce pay for part of the cushion price. Will they pay if you buy from the USA.

CPAP dot Com, does not ship CPAP machines by post office, something to do with the tracking and insurance.

For Canadians:

There is no duty for Medical Supplies from USA. My Aussie Hose did not get stopped for duty from Australia, but I do not know if it the case.

There is no GST for medical supplies.

Yes there is the exchange.

Broker fees are expensive, always call the broker company to find out the specific rate/fee prices are determined by the price of what is being shipped, I think.

If you find a company that will air mail it, the broker fees are cheap, then you will get remembersed, since they should not have stopped the package.

Make sure the package says Medical Supplies on it.

Another option, if you live near the border. Get something shipped to the courrier customer service counter that has pick up, closest to your home town. Cross the border to pick it up. Remember your Passport and Rx. If you go this route, many companies do not charge shipping in the US. it will cost you gas money and your time.

It is up to the customs to find the directive that Medical Supplies do not have Duty or GST.

Of course the bottom line is your out of pocket money. If your insurance will not pay, then that will be expensive for you, unless the DME is charging so much that your out of pocket money is more then what you would pay on line for the machine.

I can do this, I will do this.

My disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, nor have I ever worked in the health care field Just my personal opinions.

Thank you for all the information. It has been very helpful. It seems like a lot of trouble to save a bit of money. I will think about it. This forum is great.
