How long will this burst of energy last?

Post by Candi » Tue Mar 27, 2018 2:59 pm

I started my CPAP therapy 13 days ago. Nothing for the first 10 days. I was exhausted all of them. And then two nights ago I somehow slept for 10 and a half hours and yesterday I had so much energy I thought I was going to jump out of my skin. Last night I slept for eight and a half hours and I feel the same way today; I have an unbelievable amount of energy. I'm 56 years old, but I feel like I'm a 10 year old on a sugar high. I don't want to complain because I spent so many years feeling exhausted, but I don't know how I can live in this state constantly. I feel like I'm on a caffeine high. When this wears off, will I still have energy? What will it feel like when this wears off?

By the way, this forum has been amazing and I have gotten answers to so many of my questions without having to post and I'm very grateful for it. At some point I will figure out how to do a profile so people can see the relevant info beneath my name.

Welcome to the forum.

When you have time this page explains how to do the equipment profile in case you haven't figured it out yet.
wiki/index.php/Registering_Equipment_in_User_Profile

As to your question how long does it last? Unknown. I am still waiting myself.
But to be fair...it's not because of my cpap therapy. It's because of other stuff going on in my life that cpap can't fix.
I have had that burst of energy thing on a rare occasion but never consistently due to those other things.
Even at my worst though it is still better than before cpap.

Enjoy it while it lasts.
In many cases, people cut back on their sleep so they start dragging a little. At some point many start to think that the mask is not helping anymore so they skip it for a night and then they realize WOW what a difference. Often you only appreciate something when its gone.
Glad to hear you are feeling so well.

So many people have issues along the way that I try not to be too positive. I haven't napped since the first day I strapped in last July. I slept as much as I could stand for two months, like 10 to 14 hours a night, which I haven't been able to do for years. Now I've settled in to about 7.5 hours and don't feel tired until bedtime.

Sometimes you get the best case scenario.

I can't figure out if there's a way to respond to individuals, so I'll have to put everything in this reply.

Thank you for the link on how to update my profile. I will do that soon.

Thank you for the suggestion to cut back on the number of hours I sleep. I'll have to see if this continues like this and if it does, I'll definitely try to cut back. I'm lying in bed at 10 p.m. having woken up at 7 a.m. and I cannot relax at all. I'm going to try to read and see if that helps.

Thank you, everyone!

Candi, I can't say that I ever experienced a burst of energy like you describe (love the comparison to a child on a sugar high) but I have a lot more good days and even my bad days aren't that bad anymore. Glad to hear you're having positive results!

I don’t know how long it will last but your post gives me hope. I still feel exhausted despite sleeping through the night and having a low AHI (1 last night).

Is there a way to just use part of the quote? Do I have to go back and brush up on my HTML to figure out how to do that?

Thank you!

I really hope you're able to feel good soon! Honestly, those first two days of high energy made me feel pretty uncomfortable. Last night I ended up only getting five and a half hours of sleep and I feel kind of normal today. That is, I feel well rested, but not jittery or hyperactive like I did the last two days.

Sounds like an improvement. I hope the rested, non-jittery feeling continues for you! :)

Yep. Just highlight the portion you want to quote and then hit click on the quote thing on the forum editor.

You can do this...

Is there a way
Or this

brush up on my HTML
or any combination and even do a line by line answering of questions this way.
Only drawback is sometimes when quoting something that already contains quotes is sometimes who said what ends up not being correct so just watch it to make sure you don't lose who said what.

I got that burst of energy after 3-4 weeks. It lasted about 2-3 weeks and today I dont have it anymore..

I feel better today than before CPAP (at least I dont wake up gasping for air) but I do wish i had that energy burst again.

Whatever you are doing dont change it! That energy burst is nothing to complain about. It was great having as much energy as my young kids. I like to think it happens if you sleep at the same time and put in enough hours of good sleep for a week or two. Maybe you can convince my kids to let daddy sleep... and maybe i shouldnt be on this forum after midnight.

Here's what my primary care physician said back in 1999.

My red blood cell count had dropped precipitously after starting CPAP. He said that the new levels were "normal" and the old levels were high. However, the drop was so sharp that he ran lots of tests anyhow.

He concluded that having Sleep Apena has the same effect as living at a very high elevation. There is less oxygen at higher altitudes, so you need more red blood cells to deliver enough oxygen. The same, he concluded, must apply to Sleep Apena. Thus, this was the same effect as a person who lives at a very high elevation experiences when suddenly traveling to sea level. Note that Kenyans seem to predominantly win the N.Y. Marathon. The altitude in Kenya is very high, and N.Y. City is at or near sea level.

. . . "had so much energy I thought I was going to jump out of my skin."
I'll have some of that, too, please.
