Best location for CPAP equipment

Post by gregnga » Mon Jan 08, 2007 9:37 pm

I just bought a new bedroom suite. I was thinking of putting the CPAP machine on the nightstand. If I do it would be level with the sleeping surface of the bed. Previously, I set it on the floor. It seems like I read somewhere where the machine is supposed to be below the level of the sleeping surface. Or, does it matter?

I like mine on the floor for two reasons

1) Less likely to pull it off the night stand and damage it in the fall

2) If you have rainout issues water in the tube will run back into the tank.

I kept my on a wastepaper basket at the side of my bed, until my daughter put a couple of dirty diapers in it. Boy, does it pick up the smell.

I moved it to my desk, until I pulled it off the other night at 2 in the morning.

Now I just have it sitting on the floor.

Also it can be less noisy for you on the floor, I keep mine on a footstool about one foot off the floor.

I keep mine on the floor. I don't want to worry about leaks ruining furniture or knocking it over. It also seems to lessen what little sound it makes by not having it so close to my head.

I started with a Fisher & Paykel HC608 and had it on a bookcase beside my bed, but I accidentally pulled it off the bookcase when I rolled over one night and I had water coming up the tube into my mask from the humidifier. Freaked me right out.

Then I put it on the floor, but with my current machine (S8 Autoset) it's a pain to read the LCD, so I've now got it on the second shelf, below the bed height, but I rigged something to hold it on the shelf.

Hose Puller

Post by Hoganflagle » Tue Jan 09, 2007 5:27 pm

I started with mine on the floor but went to the night stand as I found that the hose had more pull from the floor. Anyone have any detailed tips on how to secure the hose so that it is not a pulling force on the mask? If so, I will gladly put the unit back on the floor rather than risk pulling it off the night table.

I have mine in the second drawer of my nightstand. I leave the drawer open about 3/4s to allow for ventilation. This way the machine is below the sleeping surface to help prevent rainout and gives me a little more reach with the hose. Also, we have the house sprayed for bugs once a month and I did not want the chemicals near the machine. This keeps the noise down, but I need to be careful when filling the humidifier.

Mine is on the night stand - about level or a bit lower than the mattress. Never had rainout and to keep it secure, I cut a piece of that rubbery Rubbermaid shelf liner and put that under it. It doesn't go anywhere (so far anyway - maybe I'm just living on the edge! LOL!)

For the hose pulling,

You can wrap a length or ribbon around the hose and pin it to the sheet.

or you can buy or make one of these;
