Jacko - howya goin mate !

I live in the big smoke - the one a few undred miles east o the black stump. So you r down south eh ?

Neva made it ta Gippsland meself - but did some time in the Blue Orchids based in Laverton. Also did a spell before that in the bush at Wagga Wagga when Forrest Hill was still commisioned & rookies were still done there (before they shifted em to Edinburgh SA).

Theres a few of us Oz lads here at cpaptalk - the others are I think also from sinney.

Cheers mate

Feeling a bit guilty about using so much Aussie slang so here are some explanations ...

1) Boomers - male kangaroos (females are also called 'flyers' or 'jills', babys are 'joeys'). Also the word 'mob' is used to describe a group of Kangaroos or Sheep, or Aussies (or in reality, any group of people i.e. 'a mob of yahoos' is a group of boistrous young people ).

a 'Big Red' refers to the largest Kangaroo type of the species. These can get as tall as 6ft 7in and are regarded as 'roos to keep away from. They can be tough & dangerous. Most of the domesticated roos are the Eastern Gray variety. These are a bit smaller and more docile.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kangaroo

2) Use of the word Youse - a strange Australian pluralization of you - I guess not disimilar to y'all - my Grandma used to use the word all the time, many folk still do but it is considered bad English

I have always regarded this word as of Irish origin or influence (so many Fennians & other Irish criminals were shipped to Australia along with the typical London Cockney criminals). Here is a link that seems to endorse this view, also, it seems the word is used in the US as well.

(see approx 16 paras down starting ... "Raymond Hickey asks ..." )
http://www.let.leidenuniv.nl/hsl_shl/do ... 20lass.htm

3) 'The big smoke' means a big city. It is claimed it originally referred to london (see link below) - certainly in Australia it was a favorite description on cities used by Aboriginies and still widely understood & used today.

http://www.barrypopik.com/index.php/new ... summary18/

4) Blue Orchids - a slang term for the Air Force. I think this applies to UK, Aust and USA as there seem to be quite a few refs to Air Force & Blue Orchids. The term was pretty well understood in the years after WW2.

(This was one of the few direct refs I could find - see about 15 paras down)
http://www.awm.gov.au/events/conference/2003/nelson.asp

5) The Black Stump. This was supposed to be a real place about 3 to 4 hundred miles west of Sydney NSW. In the Wikipedia article below, the theory we in NSW tend to subscribe to is the ref to the town called Coolah NSW. The other theories don't really work for us in NSW but some other Aussies may dispute this

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Stump

So the Big Smoke east of the Black Stump - has to be the city of Sydney (MisPron Sinney by many ) by simple logical deduction

Wagga Wagga is a country town where the Air Force used to have a base called Forest Hill. When I joined, recruit training 'rookies' was done there before they moved the RTU (Recruit Training Unit) to an Air Force base in South Australia called Edinburgh.

Laverton is a suburb of the city of Melbourne & had an Air Force Base. When I was there we had a USAF unit stationed there called the 57th Weather Recon Unit (they flew U2s on spying missions over Asia )

Jacko's East Gippsland is a part of the state of Victoria of which Melbourne is the capital.

So having translated the interaction, I hope it makes more sense.

& Yes youse all, I'll thro an extra shrimp on the barbie at Christmas, one for each of yers and will happily scoff em down on your behalf with a torrent of foamin Fosters as lubrication

Thanks for filling in a few blanks on your slang.

I have always known youse blokes talk funny, but have assumed it was due to living your entire lives upside down.
I also believe that many health issues you folks have is due to always being upside down.

Come up to the upside and get a breath of fresh air.
