I NEED HELP/ Sneezing gone wild

Post by casburn1 » Mon Dec 18, 2006 2:19 pm

Hey everybody, I've been a hose head since last March. Since day one I have slept better. However, since day one I have been having a terrible time during my waking hours, Sneezing non stop with a nose like a faucet. I have tried everything over the counter. the only thing that helps and does not drug me to la la land is 24hr Claritan (If I take 3 or 4 a day) Not good Huh!. The Dr. recently prescribed (Nazonex) sorry for the spelling. It helps some. Here's the kicker. 4 nights ago I stopped sleeping with my CPAP, Everything cleared up It feels great to not be sick all day. Now what do I do. Do I (sleep bad and feel good ?or do I sleep good and feel Bad?). I have tried with and without the humidifier. I clean the machine. Would a different mask help ? I HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP ME. Thanks for yor time.

What you're describing sounds very much like some sort of irritation. Rather than drugging the symptoms (I'm not knocking you for taking something to help) I think I'd be more inclined to persue finding the cause. If the congestion disappears that quickly after you stop using cpap then it seems logical that the cpap is introducing something... whether it's foreign material or a change in the environment (inside your schnozola) is difficult to guess without a lot more information.

I would also bring this to the attention of your doctor and/or a GOOD respiratory therapist.

Really does sound like an irritation condition though.

Are you changing / cleaning your filters regularly?

You didn't mention humidifier, I had the same problem since starting CPAP, didn't get any better till someone posted use SIMPLY SALINE over the counter spray, that and raising the humidifier to #4 did it get better, in fact I stoped the prescription meds the Dr gave me for the runny nose and sneezing. Worth a try.

I had the same problem until I upped the heat setting on the humidifier. That got rid of the sneezing and runny nose but it introduced "rain out" to my life. Finally got rid of that with the ausie heated hose. Good luck.

i use a combo of Nasonex in the morning, a saline spray a half hour before bed and my humidifier is up to 5. I bought a hose cover off of CPAP.com. It worked great to head off the rainout.

good luck.

I would try one of these bacteria filters, it goes in-line with your hose and filters the air before it gets to you.

I see that you have received several good suggestions already. You probably do use distilled water in your humidifier, but I did have a passing thought that if you were perhaps using chlorinated water that could definitely be an irritant. If it continues you definitely should see your doctor for the solution so you can continue your needed therapy.
Best wishes for finding the answer soon.

And the only thing I can add is that have you tried other masks? If you are using nasal pillows, then try a full face mask. Not having the air blow directly up your nasal passages might help alot.
