Normal Leak Rate

Post by jskinner » Tue Sep 26, 2006 12:06 pm

How does one determine the normal leak rate for a given mask and pressure?

I'm having a leak rate of around 40 and have no idea if this is normal or bad.

Your FlexiFit (in fact all masks) should have come with a pamphlet that has a chart with "Bias Flow Information". This is the leak rate in L/M at various pressures. If my leak rate stays below 40 L/M I'm happy.

Thank you. Bob. It seems that every day I read these threads, I learn something new or get some valuable suggestion that would never have occurred to me.

No wonder my treatment trudged along at such a slow pace before.....I didn't have the patient experience/expertise to guide me I've now found on cpaptalk.com.

You can find the table here: http://www.fphealthcare.com/osa/pdf/HC407/185043202.pdf

Looks to me that, at a 6 pressure, the built-in leak rate is 27-28. Any over that is a "real" leak.

you need to get out the datasheet that came with your mask.

Look at the graph on that datasheet, find your CPAP pressure (cm), then find the intentional leak/flow rate at that pressure (i.e. 38L/m).

If your mask has a intentional leak rate of 38L/m and your machine says leak rate is 40L/m then it is:

Machine reporting leak=40L/m
- Mask intentional leak=38L/m
-----------------------------------
Actual leak rate: 2L/m This is the leak rate between the mask cushion and your face (or humidifier tank coupler, mouth breathing etc.).

All mask should have a flow rate "datasheet" included in the package when you purchased the mask.

What is an acceptable leak rate? Depends on your machine, for the Remstars if you keep things below 50 L/m the machine won't complain much nor will it impact therapy. Leak depends on the size of the leak and the duration.
