How quickly do you fall asleep?

Post by Cathyann » Sun May 07, 2017 11:01 pm

I tried to do a search and nothing turned up??

How long, on average, does it take you to fall asleep?

0-5 minutes?
5-10 minutes?
10+ mins?
Other, please explain.

Thank you.

On average, maybe 15-20 minutes; sometimes less. If I have to fuss with bedclothes because of room temperature or with my equipment to stop mask leaks, then somewhat longer. If I am feeling anxious at the end of a stressful day, then quite a bit longer, at which point I shift into insomnia coping mode.

Everyone is unique and every night is unique because there are so many variables involved in easily dropping into sleep. Do you have a specific issue that you need help with? If you can articulate that, then we can better help you.

Enshaded in forgetfulness divine

Not particularly, just curious about the average time it takes folks to fall asleep. Of course there's going to be variables.

For me, on average, I can fall asleep at the drop of a hat..0-5 minutes most of the time and my husband is amazed. I do have the rare occasion when something's on my mind, I'll not be able to get much sleep at all and toss and turn all night. Luckily that rarely happens. Knock wood!

I think it's a fair question. In general, how long does it take for you to fall asleep?

I try to stay up very late until I'm exhausted and then pretty much assured I will sleep. There's no middle of the road for me. I'm either asleep seconds after my head hits the pillow or it will be hours of dozing in and out. On those bad nights, more often than not it is due to my own actions, like a late night coffee.

I gave up drinking anything with caffeine after 12 pm because it affected my sleep. In my younger days a cup of coffee in bed before turning out the light was not a problem but not now. Alcohol however..........

For me... it's within five minutes. I'll lie there with the light on, say a few prayers, recount if I was a good boy and when I was a bad boy during the day... flip the light off...then off to la-la land.

Reading in bed has always been part of my routine. When I'm not going through a bout of insomnia, I usually fall asleep within 10 to 15 minutes whenever I read in bed. Normally I'm aware that I'm falling asleep, and switch the lamp off, and mask up, but if I don't, my husband wakes me up, tells me to put my mask on which I do, and then I promptly fall back asleep.

Now on those nights I have insomnia, well .... those are getting fewer and fewer, thankfully, but like a pesky relative, insomnia never really goes away, and tends to come back, so on those nights, all bets are off. I've made peace with it, however, and it doesn't upset me anymore.

Dr. William Dement’s (founder of the Sleep Research Center at Stanford University) study and future research into sleep latency found that, on average, it takes between 10 and 20 minutes to fall asleep. A commonly-cited factoid states that it takes seven minutes for the average person to fall asleep, which can fit with this research depending on what you classify as “sleep;” It takes about seven minutes to reach a state where alpha waves dominate and we achieve a state between sleeping and waking—we might describe it as dreamlike, hazy, and peaceful, and it may even come with mild hallucinations.

We remain in this in-between state for five or so minutes, and then theta waves take over and we transition into the first stage of full, if light, sleep. This brings the total transition from awake to asleep to somewhere around 15 minutes.

If you’re on either extreme of the sleep latency spectrum—taking you less than five or more than 20 minutes to fall asleep—your body is trying to tell you something. Conventional wisdom goes that if it takes you less than five minutes to fall asleep, you’re extremely sleep-deprived; if you fall asleep within 5-10 minutes, you’re dealing with moderate sleep debt; between 10-20 puts you in the average, healthy zone; if it’s taking you longer than 20 minutes to fall asleep each night, you may be sleeping too much, or it could be a matter of poor sleep hygiene.

Ever since I started with a CPAP its somewhere around 20 minutes most nights. Before CPAP 45 minutes or more were typical for me.

I hardly ever pay attention to it, but it is often some time before I mean to turn off the radio.

Typically 15 minutes unless RLS or neuropathy is giving me trouble. Then it's anybody's guess. I found after adding the "ocean waves" sound, I tend to be less bugged by the Darth Vaderness of it all.

I have my ramp set at 10 minutes. I rarely am awake to feel the full pressure of 11. I start at 9.
