Off the grid power

Post by dplum » Thu Sep 29, 2016 2:40 pm

Hello to the group!

I'm looking for portable power enough to run my Respironics Dream Station for about a week. I've bought the small battery packs, made for my machine, but I can only get a couple of nights with them. I am not running the heated hose or the humidifier and I run at a setting of vpap setting of 12-15. I need a way to run my machine at an off the grid camp, for a week at a time, during winter months where solar panels aren't going to do a lot to help recharge.

Does anyone have any suggestions that they've tried and made work?

Thank you!!!

Just buy you a nice little generator and a good fast battery charger.

Its easy. Figure about 6-7 Amp-hours a night for the pump. 7 nights means about 50 AH. A 100 AH Deep Cycle should cover it with a fair reserve. If you can run a car for an hour or two your can easily put a lot of juice back in, though it is tough to top it off. If there is no alternate power, you could simply bring a second battery to make sure you're covered - that's cheaper than a genset or solar panel. 100 AH deep cycles start at under $100 @ Walmart, etc, a better choice would be AGM (spill proof!) for $150-200.

BTW, you might have a number of people wanting to charge cell phones and ipods off your batteries.
