Reading and verbal fluency terrible. Not sure what to do!

Post by Spinzelo1 » Wed Sep 21, 2016 4:12 am

Hello all,

I just woke up with a pounding headache and shortness of breath and thought enough is enough I am going to post on a forum about this and here I am.

I have been having a problem with concentration/focus/brain fog whatever you want to call it for 3 years now. My verbal fluency and reading fluency are effected. I have cut out alcohol, lost weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle for the most part. But I am so tired throughout the day, more so in the afternoon. When I say tired its a diffetent kind of tired, like my eyes feel heavy. I cant read well all day, like I skip over words, reread stuff a lot and cant read fluently. Can this all be apnea related? My fiance says I snore sometimes and sound strange while sleeping I have a sleep study coming up but not for a long time. What can I do about this in the meantime? I have a daughter on the way and I want to be 100% there for her and my fiance! Thank you for youf time!

What is "a long time" re date of your study? Can you ask about a cancellation list? Bug your doctor to try and get you in somewhere sooner? One tip while you're waiting - do everything you can (wearing a backpack, using pillows in behind) to not sleep on your back as it provokes more apneas (if you are having them).

But - I would also ask your MD to refer you to a neurologist for a closer look at the reading/fluency problem - you may or may not have sleep apnea, but you may also incidentally have cognitive problems for all kinds of reasons, and I would not necessarily blame everything on presumed apnea.

Have you had your eyes checked recently? Sometimes the most obvious things can be overlooked!

Yes.

Call and ask to be put on a cancellation list. It is common for people to cancel the day of the study. Be prepared to go when called.

In the meantime, avoid back sleeping. Sleep on your sides. Arrange some pillows at your back, so you can't roll onto your back during the night. Side sleeping helps mitigate sleep apnea in some people, but it is usually not a complete treatment.

Come back here and register if you get a diagnosis of sleep apnea.

Good luck.

Yes, to what Granny said: Just recently I got bumped up a month since I was on a cancellation call list... I go in tomorrow!!! Not only that, but for another doctor I had to delay my visit, so naturally someone else got bumped up. Cancellation and rescheduling stuff happens all the time, so take advantage of it. As also mentioned, please register so you can get the added privileges that are offered.

I second the suggestion to get on the sleep lab's cancellation list - that got me in months sooner.

I couldn't wait and bought a used Auto machine. Ask for recommendations here - you want one that works with Sleepyhead. Knowing what I know now, if you have the choice, contact another sleep clinic and find out if you can get in earlier for both doc visit and study. Stupid me WAITED and I could have done all that in a week by going to another clinic.
