Sigh...

Post by Janknitz » Sun Sep 11, 2016 4:14 pm

Getting into a FB debate with a "kinesiologist" about how eliminating dairy "cured" her apnea and she knows this because when she doesn't have dairy she doesn't snore.

Why do I bang my head against walls????

Because it feels so good when we stop?

I have asked myself the very same question when I have gotten into it with someone here.

Maybe she slept on her side the times that she didn't snore? Interesting *smile*.

There is a small (very very small) bit of reality in that. Milk often causes mucus in the throat which is why singers are told not to drink it or eat ice cream before a performance. If IF your snoring is because of the mucus (and usually inflammation) and only because of it then not having dairy MIGHT help. But only a sleep test can determine that.

I make ice "cream" out of coconut cream--no mucous.

I think there very well can be a connection between a food you're sensitive to and inflammation which may worsen or even cause some degree of apnea. What gets me is that this person is claiming that when she refrains from dairy, she has no apnea--based on her observations, not testing. And then claiming to state that she KNOWS this because she is a kinesiologist. This discussion started on a diabetes blog when a woman was asking about her husband's hypoglycemic symptoms. She is worried because he gets up 4 times a night to pee, but he has "normal" (not really) blood sugars. I mentioned that anybody getting up that often should be tested for sleep apnea. "Oh, he has sleep apnea, but he doesn't like to use the CPAP machine," was her answer. Then this bozo chimes in about how she has cured her sleep apnea by refraining from dairy.

Just gotta vent here . . .

I have a high tolerance for some woo woo alternative medicine, but "kinesiology" is not one of them. They claim a "manual muscle test" (which is essentially resisting arm movement) with a certain food in your mouth indicates whether or not you are sensitive to that food. Baloney times 1 million. And the important message that frequent night wakenings should be evaluated for sleep apnea gets lost in her hokum.

I studied kinesiology in college. I had to memorize a ton of origins, insertions, and actions for every darn muscle in the human body (oh how I hated that class with an uninspiring professor!!!). I had to learn REAL manual muscle testing, to test the strength of all those darn muscles, to understand how movement, positioning, and real live physics (gravity and torque, anyone?) affected strength, motion, function, coordination. None of this tells you one damn thing about food sensitivities!!!

Ugh, now the OP wants to PM the kinesiologist on how to test for food intolerances instead of getting her husband to use the CPAP.

Just shoot me!

Keep an eye out for people claiming that they bought an Airing on ebay for $2.99 and it cured their apnea and cpap machines are a scam!

Funny, all the doctors I worked with at the neurology institute used electromyography to test muscles... wonder what they'd think of the 'testing' you mentioned! Seriously... some people are so far off on their tangents they may never find their way back to sanity.

I like the way Terry Pratchett put it "couldn't see sanity with a telescope".

REAL manual muscle testing is how occupational and physical therapists and physical medicine doctors measure muscle strength. So called "kinesiology" is psuedoscience.
