AHI not zero

Post by D.H. » Sat Sep 10, 2016 9:23 am

My AHI is generally considered "good," but I wonder if it would be advantageous if I could get it to consistently be zero.

BTW, my baseline test back in BC (before CPAP) days was 52 apneas per hour!

That is not a realistic goal it would be more realistic to shoot for 1 or below. The medical community considers under 5 and being "treated" .The goal here is not to get the lowest score but rather to get the best sleep that you can. Nothing is really gained if you get a great score and still fell like crap the next day.

Welcome to the forum; we can better assist you if you click on "New Users" at the top of the screen and go through the New Users Guide. There you can register a username and fill out your profile so that others may see what kind of equipment you are using for your sleep therapy. Look under "Get Started" to do that.

Thank You.

Even raising the pressure beyond what your machine has already been giving you will not make your AHI consistently zero. In fact, raising the pressure more can increase your apneas/hypopneas as it did mine. I have no idea why it does that. The goal is simply to be below 1. I went through a month of mostly 0, but now that's been followed by a month of regularly going slightly above 1. Same mask, it's slightly more humid, but otherwise, who knows. I just know when comparing to numbers last year that it appears to be a seasonal thing. I suppose if I didn't leave my windows open at this time of year, my numbers would be less (maybe), but I'm not willing to change my lifestyle more for the sake of small numbers that really don't make much of a difference. If your numbers are below 1 and you still are in a fog, then you need to look at other possible causes.

I have never seen my AHI below 1. I am lucky if I can keep it below 2.

The question is how do you feel the next day? If you feel great don't worry about it.

I range average from 0.0-0.4 and sometimes a 1.0; No noticeable difference to me.

When I was sick the other night, my AHI was over 2. Usually it hovers around 1.

I have been on CPAP (then later on my current APAP machine) for year and a half and my highest number so far has been 1.1 and that has happened twice. I seldom go above .5 and have had many zeros (oddly, the CPAP was almost always "0"). In any case, I feel the same the next day, but these numbers would all be considered excellent and probably not typical for most CPAP users. My sleep study AHI was 49, so I have been very lucky with getting such good results.

What machine and settings are you using?
If you're using an Auto and a range of pressures, the minimum pressure needs to be up to where it eliminates the vast majority of your events. In that sense, it's similar to using straight pressure.
