The A-Flex effect

Post by slicaart » Fri Sep 09, 2016 11:22 am

Well, my first night was a little discomforting. My mask felt like it was trying to blow off my face all night using my APAP. My script settings are 8 to 15. Set on auto. The smell from the brand new heated humidifier wasn't good. My mask also was hot around contact on my face. I did manage to get some sleep but, woke up a lot. This morning I was thinking this may be more difficult than I had thought. So, I turned off the heated humidifier tube,(probably don't need it in Fl. and AC is always on 71degrees) did not use the ramp and turned off the A-Flex and took a nap. WOW, what a difference for me. With A-Flex off it was like I had no sense of pressure. I could loosen the mask and sleep on my side with no problems or leaks unlike last night. It also is less noisy with the A-flex and heater off.
This board has a tremendous amount of useful information and it just takes some time to register all of it to put it to use. So, I guess my question is do most people use A-Flex or EPR. I really could not tell the difference in the settings of 1,2 or 3. but, off is great for me. Now only if my mask didn't make my face sweat. Can't have everything I guess.

Consider a mask liner.
Pad a Cheek makes washable, reusable liners to fit your mask.
Or at least most masks. If you register and fill out your equipment, we can be more help.

AFlex is Respironics form of exhale relief...so is CFlex
EPR is ResMed's form of exhale relief.

Some people like exhale relief...some don't. It's all a matter of personal preferences or needs.
I didn't care for CFlex at all. Couldn't tell it did a thing.
Now AFlex was a different story...I loved it.
EPR...I love it as well.
It wasn't so much that I needed it but I just liked either EPR or AFlex. For me it was more like normal breathing.
For other people it may not feel that way and that's okay. We are all different and it's okay to be different.

For the sweaty face under the mask. Our own breath contains moisture and warmth so even with the heated hose turned off it can get kinda warm in the mask. A mask liner might help with the sweaty feeling. The warm feeling may be a different story. It's worth trying though. You can make your own mask liner out of an old TShirt to see if it helps or not before spending money on a ready made liner from some place like Padacheek.com.

Sweaty face, HH, too high will cause it, to cure it lower the HH temp, also lowering the room temp with A\C. I keep my bedroom at 65 degrees year around. I also don't use the HH at all, I keep ice water on the nite table for when I get dry. Jim

I can understand setting up IPAP, why we need EPAP for? If a bi-pap set the epap as 12, anything different if you set the A-flex off?

I registered last night with equipment. I guess I posted without signing in. Maybe it will show it this time? If not I'll figure it out.

Do you turn off machine to drink or just move the mask? Does it mess with data when you do either option? I was wondering if any machine had a pause button so it does not change the data if it does effect the data?

if you don't turn it off, you'll see a period of large leak on the data, you can ignore it if you know it was just you taking a drnk.
