Chemical Respiratory Allergy to CPAP

Post by Big_papi » Thu Sep 08, 2016 5:49 pm

For fourteen years I used CPAP and still use a Respironics ComfortSelect mask. I ordered replacement cushions and hoses from cpap.com. The cushions would come in an unmarked package an all was fine until May 2016 when I received one a in package with Respironics' markings on it. It had a strong chemical odor so I washed it and wore it. Only after a minute's use I got a burning in my nasal passages, mucus, a sinus headache and tightness in my chest which forced me to take off the mask. I washed it several times and let it sit out for a few weeks which got rid of most of the odor, then I tried it again, but with the same result. I ordered another, but still the same. I tried all the other manufacturer's cushions with the same result. Apparently, chemicals and plastics have been added to the silicone since I started using CPAP. Even the new hoses that I ordered this year have a strong chemical odor and have made me allergic. I'd like to hear from anyone who has experienced this or knows anyone who has.

I'd suggest you consult you doctor, allergies to silicone are *exceedingly* rare.

If you switch back to using your "old" hose(s) (and masks), does the problem go away?
Have you saved some of your previously used hoses (and masks)?
Is it the hoses AND the cushions?

I haven't seen anyone post that problem on the forum before or recently.

I always soak the piece that directly touches my face in 50% vinegar solution for two hours before the first use. This seems to cut down on the allergic properties.

Cleaning/soaking might be a good idea.
Factory cleaning solution is more likely to have changed.
I would call the manufacturer, and ask for tips on how to remove irritating residue.
