Reason for using a full nasal-mouth mask?

Post by krl » Sun Sep 04, 2016 4:58 pm

I've had a nasal mask. Now I've switched to the under the nose dreamwear pillow mask. Is the primary reason for using a full mouth-nasal mask for those have the problem of a loose jaw? My chin strap isn't working for allowing for the jaw drop and I'm curious if that's the main reason for having a full mask. thx K

While some people are going to use a full face mask because they are simply doing too much mouth breathing/leaking to have effective therapy with a nasal interface mask there are people who just prefer the delivery method of a full face mask.
Maybe they don't like the rather direct nature of the nasal pillow delivery.

We all have different needs, preferences, facial structure and things we like or don't like for whatever reason. So it may not be just because of mouth breathing that someone elects to use a full face mask.
Maybe they just like the way it feels or fits over the nasal mask. My needs and preferences aren't necessarily the same needs and preferences as someone else. Doesn't make mine any more or less important or theirs any more or less important. Just different maybe.

Sometimes people think I hate full face masks. Actually I don't. I just personally prefer something else for various reasons. Now those reasons may not seem all that important to some people but they are my reasons and that makes them important to me. I could use the Amara View full face hybrid type if I just absolutely had to use a full face mask but in over 7 years now there hasn't been one night that I couldn't get my nose clear enough to stick with the nasal pillow mask which is my preference.

My job isn't to decide what mask a person should use...my job is to try to help them use whatever mask they are wanting to use for whatever reasons they might have.
So if someone is doing some mouth breathing/leaking and it's causing a problem with either wake ups or causing sub optimal therapy for too long during the night...and they simply don't want to go the full face mask route...then I will try to help them get the leaks under control with the mask that they want to use by whatever means is necessary.

Some people just like a full face mask better and "just liking better" is a good enough reason to use it if it makes them happy.

I had to go to full face. I had bad leak problems with nasal only. Had to resort to a ridiculous mouth taping regimen. Amara view for the win. My leak numbers look good now.

I used to use one all the time because I tend to breathe through my mouth too often. Now I use it when my nose is congested and the nasal mask isn't possible.

I'm soon needing crowns for both front teeth. The nasal mask puts pressure against those teeth so the full face mask will be needed for awhile. I suspect some people who take dentures out at night also use full face.
