Nasal pillows leaking

Post by Toddavid » Sun Dec 27, 2015 10:47 am

Have tried a few different nasal pillows, currently ResMed Swift FX. Have tried different sized pillows. I can get pillows to seal at start of night, but frequently get woken up middle of night when they start leaking. 11cfm pressure.

Any tricks to keeping them sealed? All brands and sizes I've tried so far do this. I have a deviated septum, not sure if that is contributing.

Should I consider a nasal mask?

Thanks.

If you have, in fact, tried all masks and pillow sizes, then yes...try a nasal mask and don't write off ff masks. IMO they are the most comfortable. Deviated septum should have no bearing on sealing.

I started with full face mask, but I sleep slack jawed and leaking was very bad, tried about a dozen masks, couldn't stand chin strap.

Any tips regarding nasal masks, or just buy the one with best user rating? I sleep mostly on my back.

I've been using a ResMed Swift FX for the past 4 years, and only recently switched because I wanted to try the ResMed AirFit P10. I liked the Swift FX. Sometimes my nostrils get dry and I have used Aquaphor Healing Ointment (thick petroleum jelly) inside my nose to relieve the dryness. In doing this once before going to bed I found I got a better seal with my aging Swift FX mask, so I kept doing it. This is probably heresy, but that's what I've been doing for years. The new AirFit P10 seems to fit me well so I haven't used Aquaphor with it yet.

I use the Swift FX and its a good nasal pillow with pressures as high as 14cm/02 when I leave the machine on auto, you might need a apnea pillow because you sleep on your side or belly.
I use lanolin(baby section of stores) sometimes when I'm breaking in a new nasal pillow(Sore nose) on inside of the nostril and found that it improves the seal.
You might also be breathing threw your mouth with out knowing it.

When I tried the Swift FX, the short hose joins directly to the pillow and even with the swivel hose it pulled the pillows when I moved. I switched to the P10 which has a frame that the pillow attaches to with a very flexible hose. This setup has been very stable for me.

you can try the swift FX Nano nasal mask. It fits on the headgear of the Swift FX that you already have. You just have to buy the piece that goes over the nose. I find it stays in place, and I sleep on my side and move around a lot. I could not get the pillows of the Swift FX to stay in place. So I switched to the Nano nasal cushion.
