Congestion and humidity - a simple poll

Post by englandsf » Tue Dec 22, 2015 11:08 am

Just trying to prove or disprove the adage that humidity helps ease congestion for the majority of CPAP users...

you are missing an option

Humidity has no affect on my congestion
If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

Get the Clinicians manual here : http://apneaboard.com/adjust-cpap-press ... tup-manual

And there's nothing about how it's affected by local conditions, climate, season, or if you use a room humidifier at some time to add to it. It's just not comprehensive.

Trying to keep it simple, but could have done better. Can't edit a poll I don't think - for obvious reasons

I found my sweet spot. Luckily, the Auto and my Climateline handles what it needs to.

Poll limited to only those that suffer with congestion. I've never had congestion in the 8 years I've used CPAP.

Uh, "more" than what ? FWIW, I read about some people using up a full reservoir of water in 4-5 hours time. If I inhaled that much water vapor in that amount of time, I'd feel like I was waterlogged and suffering double pneumonia.

100 per cent humidity already!

Post by Gregzeng3 » Fri Dec 25, 2015 1:20 am

100 per cent humidity from my current CPAP setup. Nose needs cleaning before the cpap face mask is used. If there is mask leaking, the nasal passages can become dry, hardening the nasal . mucus linings

If the mucus is thick and/ or streaming in large quantities, that is an unhealthy result of poor health. Irritants, infections, or psychological. ...

If the mucus is colored, or with contamination, nasal cleansing might help. It is part of my normal bedtime routine.

The major reason for nasal congestion for myself is mask movement
This allows poor humidification of the air. If my mouth opens outside of the mask, the air dries the nose and mouth passages. When I awake, this becomes very obvious.

What happens during the day when you are breathing this same air without the benefit of air filtration and humidity.

I assumed you meant congestion from having a cold...??? I'm curious about more/less humidity when your nose is plugged up from a cold. Assuming that you can start out with a relatively mucous free nose when you lie down. I think that more humidity helps me here...but I'm not sure. and yes I have a full face mask for these times (well, an amara view.)

OK...443 people have looked at this poll and 19 have voted...NOW...What has it proved or disproved, aside from the fact that Polls are useless.

It could mean that the rest didn't fit into the options.

High humidity has definitely helped my nasal congestion.

Most of it is probably the 19 that voted rechecking the thread every time it receives a vote and is bumped to the top of the thread list.

I didn't complete the poll because I have always used used humidity and never adjusted it. I don't know any different so I can't see whether I like something else better. But, in the 4 years that I have been using my machine, I have thought many times about how I don't seem to stay congested very long from a cold. It seems like the air flow from the mask will often get rid of it by morning. I can't prove it, but it sure seems like using the machine clears nasal passages.
