Sudden appearance of Clusters

Post by theoldman22 » Fri Dec 18, 2015 5:02 pm

About three weeks ago, all of a sudden, after 15 years of CPAP, BIPAP, VPAP therapy, I started getting large clusters of hypoxias. I am completely physically unaware of their occurrence throughout their duration. Some clusters appear while awake—some come while I think I am sleeping. Changes of mode and large changes in pressure settings have no apparent effect when, or if, clusters occur.
Machine is a RedMed S9 VPAP Auto. Mask is FFM, a ResMed AirFit F10 (mouth completely taped with a semi- porous paper tap).
Anyway of getting rid of those clusters? Help appreciated.

What are your pressure settings? What changes in pressure have you tried?
Generally speaking, an increase in EPAP is what is done to deal with hypopneas.

This mornings printout.
Sorry, I don't know how to crop out all the unnecessary white space. Cropped it out twice in photobucket but it still comes in with the white space. Image
Thank you for your reply.
Pressures were 12.4 / 8.6 for both yesterday and today's posts. Changing pressures by relative large amounts makes no apparent difference. These clusters started appearing about 3 weeks ago. Before that pressures of 11.8/8.6 consistently produced AHI's of less than 1.
I know that I am awake sometimes when the report shows a cluster occurs. I have no physical sensation during these times.
I am beginning to wonder if there are artifacts involved.

Have you tried raising the EPAP pressure to 9.6?
Raising the IPAP pressure from 11.6 to 12.6 likely won't help.

Has anything else changed in how you sleep or in the room environment?
Different chin strap, etc.?

Thank you for the post. I used 13/9 about a week ago; and while the cluster wasn’t as large as the one I posted, there was still a good size cluster. Will try EP higher tonight. There have been no changes in habits nor lifestyle. Chin straps do me no good. They can keep my jaws closed, but my lips purse open.
Three things that I have noticed:
1. These large clusters didn’t start showing up until three or four weeks ago (have been on an apnea machine over 15 years).
2. These large clusters usually do not show up until one to three hours after I go to bed.
3. Some of the time these large clusters occur while I am awake but I do not detect them until I read the card in the morning.
4. It is difficult to believe that T would not be aware of hypopneas occurring one after the other that each sometime lasts over 40 seconds.
Thanks again.

Have you tried unplugging the machine and plugging it back in? Sometimes computers lose their brains.
