Hello- new!

Post by stepyou » Thu Dec 03, 2015 6:43 am

Hello!

I'm a 25 year old female from the UK with UARS. My diagnosis has come about it a weird sort of way because I don't have many characteristics the NHS uses to find sleep apnoea/UARS. At the beginning of this year I went to the orthodontist to look at correcting my overbite but one of the team noticed my depression, thought it could be related to my jaw and airway and referred me to the sleep clinic. It is looking likely that instead of having poor sleep as a symptom of depression, that my poor sleep was actually the cause of it. I have had depression since I was 18 and it seemed an obvious diagnosis as it runs in my family, but looking back I was probably depressed because I was too tired to be a normal 18 year old. I have been having pyschotherapy for over 18 months and would say I do not have depression anymore but am definitely still tired. I have tried so many things to improve my sleep (eye mask, essential oils, meditation, medication, sleep tracking apps on my phone...) so it was almost reassuring to find out that my sleep problems were physical and treatable!

Last month I had my wisdom teeth out to prepare for braces in January, then after 18-24 months my jaws will be broken to increase my airway. In the mean time I have just started on CPAP this week. I'm being treated by the NHS who have given me a ResMed S9 machine with an HSi humidifier and a Simplus full face mask. I'm still getting used to it but I am very hopeful that I will eventually not have to take naps all the time!

stepyou,
Been near a month now. How you doing with your therapy? Have you quit the naps yet?
Cheers,
otrpu
