No respite Despite using CPAP for 20 days
No respite Despite using CPAP for 20 days
I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea of 18.4 AHI one & a half years ago. Don't know how they arrived at that figure. I barely managed to sleep that day. I only had one symptom that was I felt dizzy thru out the day. I used to wake up several times during night but was able to sleep immediately. No Head-aces or any other symptom in morning. I was 73KG and 40 year old that time. Once diagnosed I decided to workout hard in the Jim & lost 15KG in three months. I felt lot better in other health aspects & readings but sleep was still a problem. I again did sleep study 20 days back with 19.3 AHI. Again couldn't sleep whole night. Report also said zero REM sleep & to use CPAP at 9 Pressure. As advised started using CPAP Auto set S9 with auto settings of 4 to 20. After 20 days of use I can say difference is only of 10 to 20%. I still wake up at night with no reasons. CPAP shows my AHI average 0.6 with AI 0.4 , CI 0.2 & leakage 0.1. I regularly go to Jim at 5 in the morning & workout 2 hours daily. Don't know what is keeping me away from those days when I use to feel fresh. Appreciate if anybody can help.

Re: No respite Despite using CPAP for 20 days
Twenty days is often not enough for some degree of wonderfulness to set in.
I noticed I started really feeling better after about 4 months.
Subtle changes, like fewer naps in the daytime, and better concentration, sneaked up on me.
You are showing improvement, a very good sign.

You are way overtraining!!! http://www.rice.edu/~jenky/sports/overtraining.htmlRajeev18 wrote:workout 2 hours daily
30 minutes of weightlifting four times per week is the best exercise for general health, longevity and weight control.
Rotate the movements you are doing and stick with compound lifts (ones that hit more than one major muscle group).

Thank you for the information. I thought I was doing something wrong. Will wait for the results.chunkyfrog wrote:Twenty days is often not enough for some degree of wonderfulness to set in.

If you are using a range of pressures like the 4 to 20 and the machine is making a lot of changes then those pressure changes could possibly be disrupting sleep and thus could be a factor in the unwanted wake ups during the night.Rajeev18 wrote:eport also said zero REM sleep & to use CPAP at 9 Pressure. For some people the slightest pressure change can cause low level arousals...others can sleep just fine through some pretty dramatic changes. We don't know which one you might be but it wouldn't be impossible for the pressure changes to be a factor in the wake ups.
It's not all about a nice low AHI number. There's so much more to getting good sleep quality than just some numbers.
Pretty much all apaps are full data. Which brand are you using? There is software available so that you can see in detail what those pressures are doing.

While it is possible that you simply need to give things more time...you might as well use that time wisely and evaluate more than just AHI. Get the software.

I am using Reamed S9 Auto CPAP alongside sleepy head software. I can see lot of graphs but can't correlate with awakenings. May be with time I will be able to understand those better.Pugsy wrote:If you are using a range of pressures like the 4 to 20 and the machine is making a lot of changes then those pressure changes could possibly be disrupting sleep and thus could be a factor in the unwanted wake ups during the night.Rajeev18 wrote:eport also said zero REM sleep & to use CPAP at 9 Pressure. Even if your sleep time is short, they take that time along with total events and figure your average number of events per hour to come up with your AHI. Even if you had slept longer, it is unknown if your AHI would have been higher. However, in the absence of REM sleep there's a good chance the answer is yes. It is common to have more events during REM.Rajeev18 wrote: ...Don't know how they arrived at that figure... Report also said zero REM sleep & to use CPAP at 9 Pressure. Waking up a lot when the experience is new is common. The sleeping brain can take a while to accept that it is safe to sleep with something strange on your face. Once one is adjusted, the wakeups should decrease. If they don't you'll need to go through a general checklist to attempt to identify a resolvable problem. Most basic is if your mask is comfortable and well fitting, and if your hose is managed in such a way as to not be disruptive - and on and on from there. Good luck sorting through things.

I am pretty comfortable with P10 mask. It doesn't bother me. This awakening were there before using CPAP even. I got the sleep test done to find out the reason for awakening but all I could manage is detecting sleep apnea. Core problem still remains the same. Even my doctor has no explanations to this. As advised by other members will wait for some more time to see the results.

I also observed vitamin D also plays a major role in sleep quality. I take 60k weekly. I get better sleep quality for two days after taking it. Anyone experienced this.
Re: No respite Despite using CPAP for 20 days
Ok. That's good to know. Maybe the awakenings before CPAP were due to the apnea events and will calm down over time. In the meantime, you can start thinking about if there are other contributors. Are you on any meds that might cause trouble sleeping? Did your sleep study make any mention of limb movements? Do you move around a lot or stay still? Does your entire night seem to be restless light dozing in and out of sleep, or is it blocks of good sleep with wakeups in between? Sorry to just throw out questions. Just thinking some detail might trigger a helpful thought for someone. Good luck figuring it out.Rajeev wrote: ...This awakening were there before using CPAP even... 1)Are you on any meds that might cause trouble sleeping : No
2) Did your sleep study make any mention of limb movements: Yes some movement. Doc has prescribed a medicine which I am taking.
3) Do you move around a lot or stay still: I do move heavily during workouts. 45 minutes Jogging & Cycling apart from 1.5 hours of Weight training. Once i am in office I stay still.
4) Does your entire night seem to be restless light dozing in and out of sleep, or is it blocks of good sleep with wake ups in between-: I get to sleep immediately once I go to bed. All I can remember is awaking three to four times during night but I immediately go back to sleep. Once I wake I don't feel any increased heart beets or something uncomfortable like choking etc. Its normal wake.
