Sometimes it's just not worth trying to get a bit more sleep

Post by robysue » Mon Apr 13, 2015 10:54 pm

I've been fighting something off for several days now---it appears to be an intestental bug of some sort since I've had diarrhea since Saturday morning. (Yes, it has been a miserable weekend and I called in sick and canceled my classes today.) So I took an Ambien last night since I was feeling pretty bad and Kaa, by BiPAP always make my stomach feel worse when I go to bed not feeling so great. This morning I woke up about ten minutes before 8 and turned Kaa off. I lay in bed feeling "ok"---given how rotten the diarrhea has mad me feel, but I also decided that I wanted to get a bit more sleep. I don't have to be up this semseter until around 9:30. So I turned Kaa back on, and this is what happened during the 20 minutes after I turned Kaa back on:

Usually when I have a ragged session that's only a few minutes long at the end of the night, I typically write it off as SWJ. But those "try to get back to sleep, and then give up" sessions usually only last about 10 minutes before I can't stand the sensory overload from Kaa. I also don't usually have this much snoring in those sessions, and when snoring is being scored, I usually am aware that I'm starting to snore just as I'm drifting back to dozing. And usually when that happens, I am cognizant enough of the pressure increase to worry about what it might do to the stomach.

I have no memories of snoring this morning. Moreover, when I did turn the machine off for good at 8:14, I remember suddenly sitting up in bed in a lot of pain from some pretty intense aerophagia that was no where near as bad at the ten to 8:00 wake up.

So was I asleep? Was this SWJ with more SJ than W?

At any rate, my stomach has been angry at me all day long that I didn't just get up at 7:50, before this nasty 20 minute stretch of whatever happened that lead to the machine increasing the pressure and my stomach getting aerophagia. And though it's meaningless, it's also interesting to note that if I turn that one 20 minute session off in SleepyHead, the AHI drops from 2.34 to 0.67. In other words, the rest of the night was a really good night OSA wise.

Sometimes it just doesn't pay to try to get a few more minutes of sleep.

And since the stomach still hurts (between the "bug" and the aerophagia both), I sure hope that I don't do a lot of snoring tonight ...

Man, I feel for you Robysue. I feel like I sleep the best during those morning hours when I try to grab a little more sleep, but admittedly I wake up every 15-20 minutes when I do. Unfortunately, the Trilogy isn't compatible with Sleepyhead so I can't tell if my issues are similar to what you experience.

Sometimes I wish I was using a different machine so I could track Sleep Apnea related issues instead of just respiratory results.

I'm not ill, but I made a bad choice eating out last night and was miserable when I went to bed and woke up about 3am feeling like I was going to get sick. I just laid there, hoping to keep everything down so I wouldn't disturb my husband (he gets up at 6am to drive a school bus). I stayed in bed after he got up and woke up about 7:30, but like you, decided to try to get a little more sleep.

I can't help but wonder what Sleepyhead would say was going on during that last 30 minutes when I just dozed on and off.

Maybe both you and I should just get up no matter how bad the night was, huh?

That's about what I've concluded. Now if I could only find the discipline to do it day after day after day.

Sorry to hear you had a rough night last night.

And I'm happy to say that whatever the bug was that was wreaking havoc in my intestines over the weekend seems to be gone today. And that is good news.

I'm SO glad to hear that. You've got enough to deal with without having a stomach bug on top of it.

I have tried to "train" myself to be up by the time my husband gets home from his morning bus run, which is usually around 8:00 or 8:15 if he has to get fuel. If I'm not up, like this morning, he comes into the bedroom and says "wakey wakey" -- which is annoying as hell. But I told him if I wasn't up by the time he got home, he should wake me up. Part of me gets up to avoid that annoying "wakey wakey" --
