I wake up and feel fine. I'm not sleepy durning the day I don't wake up with headaches . It seems silly that the doctor I watched sleeping at his qualified to even judge me on my sleep habits. I felt like I just paid $250 for nothing.and then to allow sone DME as I heard someone refer to them as is qualified to determine what pressure I need to be set at. Sounds like I have a better shot at letting person form the local radio shack do it for me.
- "I got by just fine without insulin for the last 36 years." said 1 year ago by the guy who just got gangrene in his foot and is wondering if he's going to have it cut off.

- "I got by just fine without blood pressure medicine for the last 36 years," said the deceased 1 year ago.

Actually, you might do just as fine buying the RIGHT CPAP machine off of craigslist and learning how to set it yourself. Note that I said "RIGHT" machine and "LEARNING."

However, you won't get insurance help, and it's not just "turn it on and forget" to use the CPAP, even if you get an auto CPAP machine.

Have you got Kaiser insurance?

The DME won't be determining the pressure. The machine will use the cell phone network to connect to a central computer, and a doctor will review the results and determine the correct pressure.

I am surprised your wife wanted to help you.
You are now insulting all the people here who are happily using a device out of the middle ages.

I know, I know... but sometimes it seems like a good smack upside the head, (perhaps delivered by his wife) would be the best thing.

"I" haven't called you ANYTHING! We're trying to HELP you! But, you need to dial it back a little bit and start learning more about this condition and the therapy that goes with it. Many of us had questionable doctors and had to fend for ourselves for various reasons. That's how we got our "education" in this........trial by fire. And, we keep trying to help people with their therapy.

Some cpap masks make you look like a firefighter, or a pilot, or an astronaut.
Not so dorky, now, is it?
Since ED is a common result of untreated apnea, maybe your wife misses that "special" delight--or soon will.
Cpap helped my concentration and my disposition--even my boss noticed it!

Yeah, it really sucks to be angry all the time, and not really understand why.
It is a shock to realize you've just blown up at someone who neither saw it coming,
or even had anything to do with why you were so out of control.
It feels horrible to sleep through the second half of every movie--you just quit going.
Staying up half the night because you woke up after only three hours--and you know even a few minutes more sleep will give you a headache that will last several hours really bites!

Hey I get where you're coming from, I was you 3 months ago. Pissed off, scared and depressed. But I realized I could stay that way and continue down a slippery slope to nothing good or be strong and figure it out. I chose the latter. It's normal to feel they way you are, expected I guess after learning you need a machine to make you healthy. Count yourself lucky that you can unplug that machine each morning and go about your day, many are hooked to machines they can never unplug. Bottom line is, there are no guarantees in life and we all should be thankful there is treatment. Hoping you'll get there at some point. By the way, I feel like a different person today from 3 months ago and I owe it to CPAP and myself for being smart enough to do it.

Your reaction is not all that unusual. This is an adjustment. I doubt your feelings against it will remain so intense. I've been doing this for about 10 years now. Few hiccups early on but not many and nothing insurmountable. If you are hearing a bit defensiveness, it's because so many here have literally had their lives saved and their quality of life restored by this treatment you rail against. Does it feel awkward to be seen in the equipment? Yeah, sure it does. But in view of how much I've gained from treatment, I'll just have to deal with it. Keep going forward and give this a chance. A real chance. A fair chance. Good luck.

Hi Derby,

You might find this thread helpful regarding your situation:

viewtopic/t61785/Especially-for-newly-d ... hange.html

Unlike many others in this thread, I think your feelings are perfectly understandable. It is normal to be angry about having to use a medical device after being so independent for years. But hopefully, you'll eventually seen this as a good thing as hard it is to believe now.

And Kaiasgram has offered an excellent point about PMing folks if you're more comfortable getting help that way.

Oh, you're gonna fit right in. The very nature of this board and the mindset of playing an active role in ones own treatment and monitoring data tends to attract those who like to be in control and want to minimize dependence on doctors for what can be done at home. Have a feeling once you settle in you're gonna like that aspect. Unless you develop an out of the ordinary problem, as far as garden variety obstructive sleep apnea is concerned, you can be in as much control as you are comfortable taking on.

You know, there are a lot of things that you can control, or at least influence. They don't include what happens when you sleep, when you're basically unconscious. Yeah, it's a drag, not going to try sell you on the glory of cpap, it's about health. I also didn't have headaches, or daytime sleepiness, etc. But my wife told me that I was snoring, and occasionally stopping breathing while I was sleeping. The stopping breathing thing got me a little concerned, so I looked into it, and found that there are a lot of effects on my health just from what was happening while I was sleeping. So I went into it with a more positive attitude than you, I'd guess. Like I value my health, and I'm going to do what I can to keep it. And it has helped, healthwise. I'm also a techie, so I wouldn't call it middle ages, more like late 1900's *smile*. Nobody else really cares about it, other than my wife that doesn't have to listen to me snoring or worry about my breathing stopping.

Not too many people really dig it, most of us do it for our health, and accept it on that basis...

OSA could definitely be contributing to your depression. That was the biggest symptom to me that made me actually agree to treatment.

If you didn't sleep much with the home study, then your degree of OSA was almost certainly UNDERESTIMATED. They say apnea just in the little bit of sleep that you got. I used to think everyone had positive sleep studies, but now know several people who had normal sleep studies.
