Who is this "Clinician" that is supposed to set up data card

Post by ElvishKnight » Fri Feb 13, 2015 1:29 am

I bought my machine in May 2011. I never heard of or discussed anything about data collection... My machine is capable of collecting data i guess..... I can not access anything in my menu cause I suppose I do not have access??? Is this something that should come from cpap.com all set up for me?

Your machine takes a special card and special card reader that is very difficult to find. The only data you will see is what is on your LCD screen each day.;

Do you really have an S8 model AutoSet CPAP machine bought in 2011? Looks like this (might have a humidifier on the front):

The instructions:

ResMed S8 Series
To get into the provider setup mode in a ResMed S8 CPAP machine - such as the S8 Compact, S8 Elite or S8 AutoSet Vantage - follow these steps:

1. press the right and down arrows simultaneously for about 3 seconds until the "Clinical Menu" appears on the screen

Use the up and down arrows to cycle through the settings and use the left "soft key" to select "Change" or use the right "soft key" to "Exit" from the Clinical Menu. Below is a list of settings you can cycle through on an S8 AutoSet Vantage automatic CPAP machine. There are four groups of settings which have adjustments and data within them.

* Settings
o CPAP Mode
o Minimum CPAP Pressure
o Maximum CPAP Pressure
o Maximum Settling / Ramp
o Mask Type
o Tube Length
o Humidifier
o Smart Start
o Leak Alert
* Results
o Efficacy Data
o Usage Data
* Options
o Smart Data
o Reminders
o Factory Defaults
o Erase Data
o Date
o Time
o Menu Type
o Language
* Servicing
o Run Hours
o Serial Number
o PCV Number
o SW Number
o BR Number

The only meaningful (to you today) number that matters is the AHI, apnea hypopnea index, and the goal is to keep it below 5, but hopefully a lot less than that in future. It's telling you how many events of both kinds you had per hour, on Cpap vs untreated.

And, you need to check the data before Noon. Otherwise it gets zapped.

That is the 95% leak rate in liters per second. Means for 95% of the night you were at OR below that number.
It's a good number as 0.40 L/sec is what we like to see those numbers below.
Your machine reports leaks in liters per second...the S9 and newer machines report in liter per minute...so 0.40 L/sec is equal to 24 L/min that you see S9 users wanting to avoid.

This is the ResScan guide but it also explains AHI and the event category breakdown.
http://www.apneaboard.com/ResScan_Inter ... -Guide.pdf
Your machine doesn't flag centrals though...need S9 or newer for that.
Historically the S8 machines like you have tended to be a little aggressive with hyponea scoring so seeing yours doesn't surprise me.

Overall we like to see the AHI less than 5.0...and yours qualifies and even if it was a little above 5.0 if it was primarily hyponea I wouldn't be too alarmed coming from the S8 or older machines.
I suspect if you were using a S9 machine that the hyponea index would likely be reduced by approx 50%.

So overall...last night's numbers look good and nothing that indicates anything exciting needing to be fixed.

Thank you so much for everyone's great feedback/info. When my insurance starts in March I definitely want to look into a S9 machine.

Good luck. The S9 vs. S8 is an enormous improvement in data collection and accessibility. The newer A10 models are probably better. Read the useful links in my signature line below for some advice on not getting screwed by the DME (CPA salesman) with the wrong machine.
