Acceptable leak rate?

Post by mgaggie » Tue Feb 03, 2015 10:42 pm

I am having a serious brain blank so I apologise for this question (I've tried searching). What is considered an acceptable leak rate? I have finally fully updated my profile, so all info is below.

Fairly generous...I believe it reports total leak and 60 L/min is where the large leak flag would be earned if using the F & P software so...same for SleepyHead.

This 60 L/min would be for the Icons...
older SleepyStyle F & P had a much more generous leak rate allowance..upwards of 90 to 100 L/min.

There should have been a leak rate chart that came with your mask. A .pdf version can also be downloaded from the manufacturer's website.
And, it will vary according to the (typical/average) pressure your machine is putting out. If you're using the Auto in a range of pressure, you'll need to figure out some of that stuff for yourself. The "acceptable leak rate" can vary.

thanks everyone. According to SH I didn't go over 60 in the leak rate, considering that I've been lucky to keep it under 60 for months, I'm very happy!

Wulfman, are you saying I should look at the instructions? Thats just crazy

That 60 L/min red line includes the vent rate numbers for intentional leak for your mask at your pressure.
Don't ask me how F & P can use 60 L/min and ResMed uses something else and Respironics uses something else all with the same mask and vent rates but...bit it is what it is. I found it in a manual for the F & P software somewhere online...and a forum member was using that software and would get a large leak flag at above 60 L/min.

silly how every manufacturer has a different large leak rate.

Either way my leak rate has dropped, so thats a good thing

I found the manual in .pdf format at this link. (if you didn't get one with it)
Personally, I hate reading manuals........

Hmmmm.... my redline is 24, indicated by Sleepyhead. I'm not sure if that's a universal number for everyone or depends on the machine.

That's a ResMed number and you are using a PR S1 machine...your red line number is probably up around 80 to 90 L/min (depends on pressure and mask used)

SleepyHead just happens to default to 24 and it shouldn't be doing that as it is confusing to some people.
You can change your red line if you wish to be more in line with what your machine's large leak territory border line is by going into Preferences and making the change.

ResMed machines report only excess leak and that's partially why they have a lower red line number.
Other brands report leaks differently...like total leak which includes the mask's unintentional leak (they all have it) along with any excess leaks.
So a leak number on a PR S1 machine might indicate 0 excess leaks and that same number on a ResMed report will likely be over the red line...but it really isn't a bad leak at all.

you'd rather have an incorrect, irrelevant 'reference'?

there is no reference for your machine., watch for the large leak flags.
