sinus drainage in daytime

Post by energyquest » Tue Feb 03, 2015 3:29 pm

Every few days I am getting sinus drainage and sneezing during the day, beginning as soon as I take off my mask (nasal pillows). I am faithful about washing the nasal pillows daily with baby shampoo. I wash the hose every few days. 98% of the time I drain the water from the reservoir so the whole machine has the day to dry out. Anyone know what might cause this sinus drainage irritation?

Most likely not from the CPAP

You either have the humidity set too high for your environment (adding more than needed) or else you have a problem unrelated to Cpap.

Have you recently started xPAP treatment? Our nasal linings take a while to adjust to breathing humidified/heated/pressurized air. You should try waiting it out OR moving humidity/temp settings till you get it under control.

I find that for me, having 80% or 90% Relative humidity when the room ambient RH is already high, will give me a drippy sneezy nose for a few hours when I wake up. I need to dial it down to 70% in this case.

Another thing that helped me was nasal rinses via a neti pot. You may try it but make sure you have the right technoque otherwise you may make yourself more susceptible to sinus infections.

It's possible what you are experiencing is related to humidity. Are you using a humidifier and if so at what setting?
Some people experience what you are experiencing with either too much or not enough moisture.
There is no right or wrong though...there's just what your nose happens to be happy with.
If you are using a lower humidifier setting..try higher.
If you are using a higher humidifier setting..try lower.
If not using a humidifier at all...get one.
Google "cpap rhinitis" and you will see what I mean.

It might also be totally unrelated to the humidity thing.

I've been diagnosed as having a sinus infection and I'm wondering if it has something to do with the cpap machine.

Have you checked with a Dr. to see if you may have a sinus infection?

To the long time posters....have you seen post relating sinus infections to cpap usage?

Kinda also curious about that one, Jim. I've got one heck of a cold/sinus infection and have had it about 10 days now. The doctor gave me some antibiotics in case it is bacterial but colds usually come and go for me in 3-4 days tops usually.

Thought I'd do some googling and came across this.

Interesting read - thanks! I'm starting to feel a bit better from mine so hopefully I don't experience what others in Dr. Park's comment thread did. I'm optimistic that it may have just been from a lot of stress at once but as I heal up, I will also take a closer look at what others mention around this board about CPAP rhinitis and my humidity settings.

CPAP is an adventure - I have no doubt about that now.
