Hello
I'm 36, newly diagnosed 'mild sleep apnea' but my life is completely impaired from severe cognitive impairment, day time sleepiness / depression / anxiety. That I feel the need to go straight to CPAP.
I live in Australia and will be buying an Resmed airsense 10 and swift FX mask from USA supplier to save 1/2 the money. I found a very helpful post on how to go into the clinical settings for this DEVICE on here. But when I get my CPAP Titration study results from my doctor how do I convert those results into clinical settings to program into the air sense 10?
I read that someone had a stroke while on CPAP is it dangerous if you have wrong settings? I can't afford the $2500 they want to charge for the device here in Australia. I would appreciate if anyone has advice on using this device and choosing settings when I get my titration study Results, I go in tomorrow. My sleep study will just give me results and no education unless I go off to buy a device from someone here locally. I don't see a expert they just send the results to my doctor who is clueless.
Thanks for any help or advice.
Best regards
Sam

the titration results should have the numbers you need.Sambuka wrote:Hello

more likely someone had a stroke from NOT having a cpap.
there's loads of education to be had here... stick around, read old forum msgs while you're waiting for your machine

When you get your titration report you can probably have a general idea of what your settings should be. For instance if they say your recomended treatment pressure should be 10cm (this is just an example) you can run the Airsense Autoset model in straight CPAP mode at the 10cm pressure (or whatever the real figure will be).....or you'd have an option to run in APAP mode with a range bracketing your titration pressure. So get back with us when you get your titration results and the forum members should be able to give you some recomendations.
I wouldn't be overly concerned with anecdotal evidence that you mentioned about someone having a stroke while on CPAP. The health concerns with untreated apnea far outweigh any problems you may have heard about concerning someone that's on CPAP. Untreated apnea can cause serious cardio problems, as well as many other related health problems.....if you have been diagnosed with OSA you need to get it treated and PAP is the best method to treat the apnea.
Be sure and get at least the Airsense Elite, or better yet if you can swing it get the AutoSet model which is an APAP machine that I referenced above that can run in both straight CPAP mode or APAP mode. The Elite (straight CPAP) and the AutoSet model have full data reporting capabilities, the standard Airsense CPAP model does not have detailed data reporting which would be an impediment for you trying to set things up yourself because you won't have detailed data from the machine to let you keep track of your therapy effectiveness.
After you get set up with a data reporting machine you can download a program called Sleepyhead that will display the data from your machine and allow forum members to make therapy recomendations to maximize your treatment.
Link to Sleepyhead.....newest version 9.8.1 will handle the data from the Airsense Elite or AutoSet model

Thank you for the advice, I'll be sure to post my titration study results when I get them in a week or so. Sounds like I'll get some general info from the report I can use. Appreciate the feedback.

Sambuka,
Just thought I would post this link for you, the Airsense AutoSet model......you can compare various models on this site and do some research on specs and so on......again try to get either the Autoset, Autoset for her (may be good for guys too), or Elite (straight CPAP but has full data). If you are doing things on your own don't get the standard Airsense CPAP as it won't have the data that you'll need.
