Chin strap for nasal mask

Post by Blizzard » Wed Dec 24, 2014 1:33 pm

I have been using my Cpap equipment now for about 4 weeks. I have a ResMed AirSence 10 Auto set machine and am using a ResMed Swift FX soft pillow nasal mask. I am finally getting used to the mask and finding it rather comfortable. My problem is that I wake up several times at night breathing through my mouth. Of course this forces you to wake up because of the rush of air coming in caused by the air forced up your nose. I have tried using a chin strap for a week, but I still wake up now twice a night, still some how opening my mouth to breath. The chin strap is just one continuous strap, so it ends up slipping on the top of my head when I move around at night. The strap is a CareFusion(blue) strap. Does anyone know of a better strap system for keeping a mouth shut with a nasal mask? I have tried full face masks and just cannot get used to them. I would rather use a piece of tape across my mouth rather than a chin strap, as for the chin strap to work effectively you have to crank it on so tight that I worry about getting TMJ of the jaw. Is there anything that can go across the mouth (to stop the entailing)that anyone has found that works? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I've read here that medical tape works great.

I know you were asking about taping your mouth, but I've used the chin strap from My Snore Solution - you can find it on Amazon for about $35. I'm a chronic mouth breather and this does the trick at night. Doesn't move at all.

I have been quite satisfied with the PAPCap as a chin strap. Its helmetlike structure keeps the strap under my chin from slipping. My local DME can't/wont supply PAPCap, but I ordered it from one of the on-line equipment suppliers. Before getting it I had tried several of the more conventional chin straps, and always had trouble with the strap sliding on my head.
