still wake up during the night
still wake up during the night
I have been on Cpap since the end of July. I fall asleep quickly while on it, something that I did not do before Cpap. However, I still wake up a few times during the night. I do fall back to sleep, but I am wondering why I cannot sleep through the night. My machine adjusts from 5 - 12 in pressure. I do toss and turn and sometimes feel the need to readjust the mask (nasal pillows). I check my data every morning and my AHI is always under 1.0. I an diligent in using it every night and keep it on the whole night. I usually go to sleep around 11:00 and wake up for the day at 5:15. I try to check to see if the AHI times correlate with my awake times and they usually do not. Is it normal to wake up? I do not get out of bed for the bathroom, so I know that is not causing me to wake up. Sometimes, when the pressure really blows it wakes me up, but not always. Will I ever sleep through the night?

I can tell you that at least for me, xPAP wakes me up a few times a night, whereas I slept a full 8 hours before.Maryd wrote:I have been on Cpap since the end of July. Re: still wake up during the night
I'd bet the pressure changes are disturbing your sleep. Your breathing changes when you enter deep or REM sleep stages and the machine may "think" it needs to increase pressure.....so it does.....and you're bumped out of the needed sleep stage and are probably being awakened. Once you settle in on a fixed pressure, you'll probably sleep through the night.Maryd wrote:I have been on Cpap since the end of July. Just because you HAVE an Auto which will change pressures, doesn't mean you have to USE it in a range of pressures. They're a multi-mode machine and the users need to find the settings that work best for them.

Re: still wake up during the night
As an experiment, you could try reducing the pressure range from 5-12 cm H2O down to 5-8 cm H2O and see if your AHI goes up and/or the number of wakes goes down. If that gives good results, a next experiment might be going to a single pressure and self-titrating to see what that pressure might be.
Do you have a copy of your sleep study? In there you can find the pressures needed to control your obstructive apneas and let that be a guide. Adjusting to CPAP is a journey, not an overnight one time fix.

Re: still wake up during the night
I've had sleep apnea treated since 1995, but within the past few months, my BiPAP machine (Phillips M Series with ResMed Swift FX nasal pillows) has not allowed me to sleep for more than four hours at a time. Since I live in California and can legally do so, I've smoked pot before retiring, and when I wake up in the middle of the night, I sometimes smoke some more, and sometimes take half a Benadryl to attempt to go back to sleep, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I'd love to sleep for the 6-1/2 hours straight that I need to function fully, but nothing I do seems to allow me to do that. I admit I've changed the machine's pressure several times to the point that I don't remember what the sleep study I had about 18 months ago said it should be at. It's currently at 14/12.5, which seems to work pretty well, but I still wake up. HELP!

Sleep apnea is not the only thing that can disturb your sleep. There are many variables, sleeping partner, pain, outside noise, room too hot/cold or your set biological clock.

(had it on low the first couple nights this week, tossy turny, turned back up to medium the last two nights, slept much better.)
