Question about ramp feature on Resmed s9 Autoset

Post by H4X0R46 » Tue Sep 09, 2014 6:07 am

Hello guys! I just have a simple question about the ramp feature on my machine. So, if the numbers are set between 6 and 16, and I have the ramp feature on, does that mean the number won't climb at all until the ramp is over? Or how does this exactly work? Thanks everybody!

During the ramp time, (5-45 minutes, I think), the pressure goes up to the 6 cm,
from whatever the start point was set for the ramp. Ramp is set separately from treatment range.
Some choose to skip the ramp, or make it very short.

The autoset algorithm does not commence until the ramp period is complete. From the clinician's manual:

Ramp time defines the period during which the pressure gradually increases from a lower more
comfortable start pressure to the minimum AutoSet pressure before the auto-adjusting algorithm
commences.

Oh alright! So if I have the ramp on, it should stay at 6 (in my case) until the time is up?

Nick, I'm sure you're right but I dod NOT know that.

H4X - the ramp starts at 4 and builds up to 6 over the set time. With such a big range I'd try and keep your ramp time short unless you're struggling with pressure.

I have a minimum of 10 and use no ramp - I like the pressure blowing my nasal passages open.

Alright! I'm also a bad insomniac, and this machine tends to go real high pressure before I can even fall asleep! So if I set the ramp as long as I can, will it stay low until the ramp is over? Thanks guys for your replies! Appreciate the help!

It won't stay low, but climb very slowly according to the ramp time you input. But of course you're not getting optimal therapy during that time.

What are your actual settings on the machine?

Is your ramp going from 4-6 and then your prescription of 6-16?

Or is the ramp going 6-16 and your prescription is a straight 16?

It's hard to tell from your description, and that makes a big difference in what you are feeling and how we can help you adjust.

Also, your machine has full data. You can use ResScan or Sleepyhead (both free) to view your data. If you post it here, we can help you make adjustments that will allow your treatment to work well and be comfortable.

You also don't get "compliance" credit during the ramp period. For example if the ramp is set to 30 minutes and you sleep for 5 hours, but stop the machine twice during the night to fiddle with something, that will count for about 3.5 hours of use (you lose 30 minutes at the start of the night and 30 minutes each time you restart the machine) - you would be considered "out of compliance" for the night. This is only an issue if your insurance company reimburses upon verification of compliance or if some other agency is checking your compliance (e.g., if it is a condition of maintaining commercial license/employment as a commercial driver).

The ramp feature is great at helping you get used to the machine, but many of us reduced the length of the ramp (or disabled it altogether) as we got used to the machine.

Oh wow! It doesn't count for compliance? Dang.... Thanks for telling me that! And zoocrewphoto, my prescription is 6-16. Thanks for all of your help! One more question before I wrap up this thread, do any of you guys know any tricks to stop the straps on my quatro from putting so much pressure on the back of my head? It gives me a headache almost instantly :/

Have you confirmed that off the screen? It doesn't make sense to use ramp from 4-6. So, I find it strange that they would even turn on the ramp if your starting pressure is 6. It makes more sense to have a ramp for 6-16.

It sounds like your straps are either too tight, or positioned in a way that causes pressure in the wrong spot. Try moving them around and/or loosening them.
