CPAP comes through at the hospital

Post by kaiasgram » Fri Feb 05, 2021 1:33 pm

We both dislike our CPAP machines and frequently complain about having to use them, drag them through airports, etc., and hubby has had a couple of hospitalizations where the way the staff set him up with his machine made it near impossible to use all night.

This time, however, is different. Hubby was recently diagnosed with lung cancer and had surgery yesterday.

With much pain, a partial lobe removal and a post-op tube sticking out of his chest, hubby discovered that his CPAP machine is making it much easier to breathe (turns out breathing is difficult and painful after lung surgery, who knew?! :) ) This despite hospital respiratory therapist setting his machine up two feet or so above his head, causing almost immediate rainout (was quickly corrected by a nurse). In fact, the CPAP is proving so helpful that he kept it on this morning after he woke up and was just watching TV.

After 8 years on CPAP for both of us, we will probably always have a love/hate relationship with our machines but at the moment the relationship is going strong.

Stay safe out there everyone.

Wishing your husband a speedy and complete recovery. I hope he has a very good outcome.

When I have bronchitis, my CPAP is a godsend. It calms my breathing and I stop coughing--I have cough variant asthma. I can sleep with CPAP during bronchitis--before CPAP I'd have to sit up in a recliner chair, mostly not sleeping, for days on end. I can actually rest when I have bronchitis. Since I have to be resting anyway, I have the CPAP on most of the time when I'm sick. Fortunately, I don't get sick very often anymore, and I give partial credit to CPAP for that too.

My daughter had lung surgery (not cancer) many years ago. Two years later she had a baby girl. :D

Best wishes to your husband for an easy recovery!

*HUGS* to you and best wishes to your hubby,

Now that you mention it, thinking back 40 years, I wish CPAP had been around for my grandfather during his battle with lung cancer, I'm sure it would have made life a lot more pleasant for him, while he struggled to breathe.

Again, best wishes to you and your hubby.

Thank you, Maddie and Palerider.

Brought hubby home from the hospital today. Long road to recovery, but we're grateful and hopeful.

Good to hear from all you guys :)

Congratulations on getting him home. I always feel better when I am at home versus in a hospital. I don't care how good the hospital is or how well they treat the patients, I always feel much better at home.
