Roaring loud humidifier
Yikes! First night trying a humidifier, roaring like jet engine. Without humidifier, machine was quiet. Is this normal? It is a PR System One, never used before.

Check that the humidifier lid is closed properly.

It was. Just took it off cpap and reattached, everything seems secure, still incredibly loud. This can't be right....SleepyToo2 wrote:Check that the humidifier lid is closed properly.

no, it's not usual for it to make much difference in the noise at all... figure out where the noise is coming from.surf_rower wrote:Yikes! First night trying a humidifier, roaring like jet engine. Without humidifier, machine was quiet. Is this normal? It is a PR System One, never used before.
make sure it's seated good between the two units.

Re: Roaring loud humidifier
With the ResMed S9, the humidifier actually makes the cpap much quieter. If all is right, that is, lid closed, well attached and all. I'm pretty sure that you're hearing leaking air, so you might look for where the air is leaking out. In fact, I've found that I couldn't sleep without the humidifier in place, the cpap without it was too noisy for me.
Something's wrong there, you must have some kind of leak somewhere. One thought is that the S9 has a large silicone gasket that seals the lid of the humidifier. If that gasket were not seated correctly or missing, there would be a lot of leakage...so that's one thing to look at, the seal for the lid as well as its being closed.
Good luck in your detective work.

Noise is an indication of an air leak somewhere. You likely don't have the needed pressure at the hose end either when you hear this noise.surf_rower wrote:Yikes! Make sure the water chamber is inserted - inserted properly and the lid is closed - fully closed and seated.
Re: Roaring loud humidifier
Dumb question - is the tank like a Resmed tank? Mine got very loud when I forgot to put the tank in! and quite loud when the tank was not latched closed correctly.

It is not normal, my system one is quieter with the humidifier.surf_rower wrote:Yikes! First night trying a humidifier, roaring like jet engine. Without humidifier, machine was quiet. Is this normal? It is a PR System One, never used before.
There are 4 seals on the system one humidifier, any one of them can cause your problem.
1: inlet seal, between cpap and humidifier.
2: dry box seal, behind the water chamber.
3: water chamber lid seal, inside water chamber lid.
4: humidifier lid seal, between the water chamber and the humidifier lid.
It's most likely the dry box seal. Remove the water chamber and make sure the seal that it goes into in the rear of the humidifier has not been dislodged .

Take the mask off the end of the hose. Start the machine, and put your thumb over the end of the hose. If you hear much air noise, there's a leak somewhere. It should be pretty quiet with the airflow stopped. Take your thumb off the end of the hose and see if the air sound in the humidifier gets louder or quieter.
Does the noise vary much between inhale and exhale if you have the mask on?

It does vary some on inhale exhale with mask on, but not a lot.archangle wrote:Take the mask off the end of the hose. Start the machine, and put your thumb over the end of the hose. I checked everything again just now, seems tight, two loud clicks when I put the humidifier on. Rubbery gasket around tube outtake is in place. Tried the thumb test, and the noise stayed the same loudness, just a bit higher in pitch with tubing covered. I can feel some air coming vaguely from the front around the edge of the water tray, but not a lot of air, and the tray seems seated tightly. Maybe there is a gasket missing from the edge of the tray...
Thanks everybody for helping me figure this out. Tonight I have to get a good night's sleep so I'm gonna remove the humidifier again, but I wish I could use it, am really stuffed up...

Re: Roaring loud humidifier
Gary UT, by "seal" do you mean a flexible gasket? The only two in there are (1) on the tubing outtake going up and (2) on a connector leading to the side to the the air hole from the CPAP.Gary_UT wrote:It is not normal, my system one is quieter with the humidifier.surf_rower wrote:Yikes! It's most likely the dry box seal. Remove the water chamber and make sure the seal that it goes into in the rear of the humidifier has not been dislodged .
There is no flexible seal on the clear acrylic water chamber itself, nor on either surface of the two machines where they click together.
Thanks

Yes I mean flexible gasket. Here are some photos that may help:surf_rower wrote: Gary UT, by "seal" do you mean a flexible gasket? The only two in there are (1) on the tubing outtake going up and (2) on a connector leading to the side to the the air hole from the CPAP.

This is the inside of the humidifier with the water chamber removed. The seal on the top is the one that seals between the output of the water chamber and the hose connector. the fitting in the back with the 2 seals on it can be removed by releasing the catch on the outside lower rear of the humidifier, and sliding the fitting forward.
This is the fitting removed from the machine. the seal on the left is the one that seals between the humidifier and the CPAP machine. The one on the right is where the inlet to the water chamber connects.
And lastly the water chamber has a flexible seal on the top edge:
If any one of them is missing, damaged, or not installed properly you will have an air leak.
Gary

Re: Roaring loud humidifier
Gary UT, thank you so much for the pictures. I am missing two of those gaskets. Now I know exactly what to ask for. Luckily, it is still under warranty!
Again, thank you thank you thank you.

Re: Roaring loud humidifier
Correction, looked again and found the gasket around the water tank. But am definitely missing the ring between the tank and the intake.
