I now have Hose Control! PICS ADDED

Post by dieselgal » Sun Mar 01, 2009 1:01 pm

Thanks to JoyD for reminding me about the post of Bellcrest regarding Hose Control. Bellcrest said she (I hope Bellcrest is a she) used an adjustable plant hanger from the ceiling that allowed her freedom of movement. I was able to find one of those yesterday here at the hardware store for 14.99 and had my hubby hang it. Last night was the first time since I have been on CPAP that I have not continuosly wrestled with that darn hose!
Thanks Bellcrest for that great LAB RAT idea and thanks Joy for reminding me.
That is a great idea and should work for anyone with a normal height ceiling!

These aren't great photos but I hope it gives the idea. At the head of my bed is a bay window or shallow window seat . You can see my m-series on the ledge behind the bed and I was able to put the adjustable plant hanger in the top of the window frame instead of in the ceiling. The retractable portion of the plant hanger will actualy hang down to 40 inches but since I hung it in the window instead of from the ceiling I didn't need that much. The gray piece you see holding my hose to the plant hanger is actually one of those soft knit headbands. I could have used anything for that including a zip tie but I like the give and stretch of the headband because it allows even more freedom of movement.

Someone told me about using a scrunchie. I just have a string hanging from the window lock and the hose goes through the elastic scrunchie. Can be put up or taken down in 2 seconds...cost...like nothing because I already had those things.

Yes, Sandman...I also hope dieselgal will post pictures of her ceiling hanger rig. I always like to add more to the page below:

LINKS to Hose hangers and methods of managing the air hose
viewtopic.php?t=10640

There's a sentence on that page, up near the top:
"These first links contain pictures of creative ways people have come up with to hang the main air hose -"

Among the links that contain pictures:

I started with a flexible faucet connector with the ends cut off and looped, connected to a swivel hook, connected to the plant hanger that swivels. When hubby got his, didn't have the faucet hose so decided to try the scrunchy for both of us...didn't like it and went back to the faucet connectors. The smooth plastic allows the hose to move freely back and forth as we move around, between the swivel arm and swivel hook, there is total flexibility with no tension or tugging at all. We have a shelf type headboard, so hubby had to make wood mounting braces to put the plant hangers on.

For hubby's connecctor (in the background) hubby cut off the actual connectors, leaving the metal pieces on and using a hose clamp to tie the ends together. I cut off all metal, ran twine through the hose and tied it up to make the loop...using zip strips to hook it all together.

Way to go, dieselgal What great photos . . . My adjustable ceiling hanger just arrived (from Ron's Hardware online store), but I haven't put it up yet. Need a helper. I like the idea of the headband - allows extra length for a 6 foot hose which I may need

Wow! Great pictures of your hose hanger arrangments -- both of you, dieselgal and Debjax!
Thanks so much for posting those.

if the one RG has posted above is the plastic pipe one, as described below, it is the easiest to do as it just slots pipe into fittings and needs no wood, screwing or nailing to anything. Get the store to cut the pieces ( I can't even cut straight) I put one together while away on holiday.
This explanation is probably superfluous, I did it yesterday then couldn't get my " log " in to work so I could send it! but as it took me so long to do it (had a bad day) you are getting it anyway

HOSE MANAGEMENT

I have seen a couple of postings regarding hose management . I tried to find an old posting with instructions and a picture but didn't manage it , SOo instead I will just put the dimensions and material needed. it's cheap and easy and works, if you don't glue the parts together you can pull it apart to take it away with you, it's light weight.

I find that regular elastic bands slipped over the sticking out hose hanger part work as well as anything, easily stretched if necessary so they don't pull on your mask.
(I have a hook, as for a hanging lamp, over the bed for my hose, and only use mine for travel but it's a good permanent solution too.)

some of the stores will cut this to size for you,
10 feet, or less, of 1/2 " cpvc water pipe hose, or a similar, (think I bought A 7' length when I left home without it once. )
joiners and finishers:
1 tee
2 unions
3 - 90 deg. elbows
3 caps

cut pipe as follows:
5 pieces 12" long approx.
2 " 6" " "
1 " 5" " "

make up a long pipe comprised of 3 - 12" pieces joined together by the 2 unions. add and an elbow to one end, henceforth known as the top and add the tee to the bottom end.
To the bottom end tee add the 2 - 6" pieces at 90 degrees, then add 2 elbows and the the 2 remaining 12' pieces complete with caps - these are the "legs" at the bottom end that you will slide under your mattress to keep the whole contraption standing firmly over your head. add caps on the ends. If you don't glue it you may need to check now and again to make sure nothing is coming loose.

on the top end of the pipe add the other elbow and the small 5ins piece, finish by adding a cap. This is the piece to which you add elastic bands, (individual or strung together) to thread your hose through.
I could post a pic if someone sends how to directions. basically it should look like gallows, (as for stringing up the bad guys)

Hello, bet you knew this was going to happen. But why the hose hanging? Is there a reason to keeping the hose up in the air? I did buggy cord mine to the side of the headboard but it is noway up in the air. I have just been letting it lay on the bed next to me. If it is better to hang it I could go over the headboard. Thanks!

N6CRV It really is purely a matter of your comfort. If you are not waking up and rearranging the hose all night then you might not need to use a hose hanger. I toss and turn during the night and was constantly having to move the hose to accomodate it. This new hanging position directly above my head makes turning over so much easier and I really don't have to think about it. In my case it also makes it impossible for me to pull my machine over by accident.
