Aussie Heated Hose idea / tip

Post by Linus » Fri Feb 13, 2009 5:12 pm

I have an Aussie Hose. This thing is great. Before I had it, I had to keep my humidifier at 2 or 47°C and I had to keep the hose under the covers. Now that I have it, I added my snuggle hose cover to further insulate it. I do not have condensation any more. I can keep my humidifier up at 4 or 62°C. I found that level works well in the dry cold air in my home at night.

I did find a minor issue with the power source connectors. The connection uses a connector that has a center pin that is 12v positive and the outer part is the ground. For some reason the inner pin may not contact the inside of the power plug if the connection is disturbed. This results in an open connection. The result of an open connection is a non-powered heated hose. This condition in a cold room with a high humidifier level for me was a cascading waterfall. I had this problem a few times. I resolved it with a simple approach, and I wanted to share this with everyone. The solution to this issue is a one time thing and it should last for the life of the hose.

1. Put a very small amount of conductive lubricant on the inside 12 v Positive terminal of the power supply plug. Small means small. You do not want excess lubricant piling up inside of the plug.
2. Connect the power plug and the hose plug together. The connection will spread the lubricant onto the pin.
3. Disconnect the two plugs and wipe all excess lubricant that may be present. If you used a very small amount, there will not be any excess lubricant to wipe away.
4. Reconnect the two plugs and test.

The conductive lubricant will keep the connection established and the hose will stay warm.

Thanks, Linus! Those are great pictures and a very good suggestion. I've added this thread to the list of topics about the heated hose:

I've run into that problem every now and then, Linus. Thanks for the tip and pictures.

I should also point out the following: If you forget to plug in the power source with a high humidifier setting, it is a good idea to turn off the machine, detach the hose, shake the condensation out of it and reconnect. I have forgotten in the past, received a gush of water, plugged in the heater and went back to sleep. I awoke shortly after with another gush of water. Always detach and shake out the water.
