From what I see on this forum, heated hoses are used for two reasons:
1. To prevent rainout
2. To provide warmer air hitting the nostrils.

If rainout is a problem first try a hose cover. That solves the problem cheaply and easily for many of us.

Do you feel you need more moisture? Why are you concerned about maxing out the H3i? Are you leaking air or mouth breathing and getting a dry mouth?

Many say that stand alone humidifiers provide more humidification than integrated like your H3i. I only use my integrated though, so take that for what it's worth.

I wouldn't worry about running your H3i at max. But if you still do not get enough moisture and have rainout (water in your hose/mask) a heated hose should help some. Not much, perhaps. If you are not getting rainout, then a heated hose will not add more moisture.

Many have mentioned stand-alone humidifiers as being better, and Slinky specifically has found a stand alone that one can get used for about $50 on eBay (search Slinky posts to see it).

OTOH, like the poster above I'm doing just fine (so far) on my H3i.

I also have a humidaire3 - I had rainout the first few nights but then I found Kathleen's comfortsleeves. Definitely the best $25 I've spent so far - not only did they stop the rainout, they also make the whole set up look much less institutional and the fleece feels great. If you're handy-er than I am with a needle, you could probably make your own very inexpensively.

As far as maxing out the h3i - I run mine about half way - some nights a little more. I have not yet felt the need to run it at full blast.

The heated hose allows the warm humidified air that's making a six foot journey from water chamber to your nose to hang onto its warmth and moisture longer. Since the hose itself is warm, the air coming through it will stay warm, too. You have a better chance of actually receiving the warm humidified air that started the long trip through a hose.

Heated humidified air traveling through a cold plastic hose is likely to lose a lot of the moisture (and warmth) along the way. The air that started out warm is hitting the sides of the cold hose all the way through. The air gets cooler and cooler. As it cools, it loses its moisture in the form of beads of water condensing on the cold inner walls of the hose ("rainout") which may just stay in the hose...or worse, drip or spray out on your face, waking you up abruptly.
