Opus - WillSucceed?

Post by Linda3032 » Fri Jan 26, 2007 5:37 pm

I notice that the Opus is listed in cpap.com (and maybe it has been for awhile). It has a due date of approx Feb. 2nd.

WillSucceed, are you still using it? If so, what tips or adjustments have you made to yours at this point?

Dang, I hate it when I get suckered in and buy a new mask instead of my beloved Aura. I guess I want my cake and eat it too. .....

Hi Linda:
I am still using Opus and I like it. I have not made any adjustments to it as I can't think of any that it needs. I was going to put an insulating sleeve over the short tube that goes between the plenum and the main air hose from the flow generator but, I have found this to be unnecessary now that I am using the Aussie Heated Hose.

PROS:
-Very light weight.
-Minimal headgear that is comfortable.
-Plenum holding nasal pillows is small and narrow, does not get bumped around, putting lateral pressure on the nares (like Swift does) when side sleeping.
-Hose attaches to plenum with a ball joint; hose can be routed pretty much any way you want. Headgear allows hose to be routed up over the head.
-Exhaust port is a grid, like CL2, and is VERY quiet.
-Overall, Opus is essentially silent.
-Headgear is easily adjusted.
-Comes with 3 sizes of nasal pillows which are easily detatched/reattached to plenum for cleaning.

CONS:
-If the back of your head is rather flat, the back strap of the headgear can tend to creep up somewhat. This can change the angle of the plenum.
-Plenum lays flat against the upper lip. If you have a 'stache, you MIGHT not like Opus. I only find Opus uncomfortable when my 'stache is really short.
-Headgear has straps that come down along the side of the face like Swift. Opus straps are narrower than Swift, and do leave marks along the side of the face.

I like Opus and do not regret buying it. If I don't use it as my regular interface (Breeze is still my fav.) I will certainly use it whenever I travel as it is so small, lightweight and packable.

Hope this helps!

WillSucceed,

What size of pillow are you using (i.e. S, M or L)? My size is L.

I tried it at the DME and although I liked it a lot (for the same reasons you do), I could not adjust it so that there were no leaks. The person at the DME told me that although there was excellent fitting for people using S or M sizes, he had not been that successful with the L size due to the design of the pillow. The L size does not leave a lot of room to adjust the angle, depending on the shape of the face.

This should be a warning for people who order without trying.

Regards,

David

I started with the medium size but, to my surprise, I am getting a great seal with the small size. Go figure...

I borrowed one from my clinic just yesterday. Tried it on it felt great, light weight, comfortable, etc.

I get home and hook it up to my machine and it was leaking like crazy (Pressure set 8 to 15 cm H2O), I tried to adjust the headgear to reduce the leaks but found I had to have it on so tight that I was starting to get a headache. Needless to say I went back to my regular mask and went to sleep.

I'm not sure if the leaks are due to the style or the size of the pillows or the shape of my nares for that matter. I have tried other nasal pillow interfaces and used a medium size with no leaks. I also was fitted with a medium for the Opus but had leaks. I'm going to fiddle some more and try to sleep through the night with it.

Otherwise I love everything about the opus.

When I tried the Opus on in the supplier's office, he started me with a medium. It leaked like a sieve.

It seems that the best fit with Opus (for me at least) has been to NOT crank it down tight. Also, I put the headgear on, stretch the headgear out slightly, align the plenum so that it is laying flat on my upper lip, then let it slide into place.

Opus nasal pillows tend to fit along the lines of Swift.
