Is Aussie Heated hose "approved" for use in US/Can

Post by TheWife » Wed Oct 18, 2006 4:27 pm

We're finally at the tail-end of getting insurance approval for my husband's equipment and settling on what we'll end up with.

The DME has ordered a heated hose for us but he says he's not sure if it's approved for North American electrical standards. I think he means in the sense, in Canada (where we are) that it's not CSA (Canadian Standards Association) approved. And when you're dealing with an electrical system that's heating something, this could be a concern.

I've written a letter to the insurance company to see if they'll cover it, but I thought I'd ask if anyone knows anything about the approval process. I guess I should also contact the Aussie hose company directly.

Thank you.

According to their web site (http://www.sleepzone.com.au) it is USA and Canada approved..I got mine last weekend and it solved the rain out but more so the cold air even though the room temp was 72 to 74.

It made a world of difference in how I slept so much so I ordered another backup on Monday.

Later,

I got a reply from them (that was fast) saying they are NOT approved for use in Canada or the US as the cost of getting certified is too much. But they are certified on the Australia Register of Therapeutic Goods and that each heated tube is labelled with a tag that shows the required listing number which is ARTG #L82265 3rd April 2002 the product is "category safe". HTH.

Hi TheWife,

Your info from sleepzone is correct. They've not applied for US or Canadian certification because of cost of jumping through the hoops.

I know you've already read plenty of topics about the Aussie heated hose, but for newcomers who might be wondering, "heated hose? what's that?" here's a clickable link to some interesting discussions:

just order the hose, order it withOUT the power supply, doesn't need CSA approval.

If they ship it to you WITH the power supply then it does require CSA approval. The hose comes with a instruction sheet that has the part numbers of the power supply you will need (you probably already have one sitting around the house that will work). All the voltage and current should be listed on the power supplies you have at the bottom. If you have a old D-link or Linksys router, it takes a power supply just like that one (same plug and everything, in fact that is what I'm using, the 9-volt version).

Their website is kind of corny but it works, just go to the page below, scroll down to the bottom and order the SZ4 hose.

http://www.sleepzone.com.au/index.html

You can purchase the CSA approved powersupply at your local RadioShack or electronic store. The hose comes with the part numbers listed so you can get the power supply locally. They cost less than $20 US.

It can use from a 9-12VDC power supply 500ma to 1AMP. If it doesn't get real cold in your room you may prefer the 9-volt power supply over the suggested 12VDC power supply. With the 9volt it won't get as warm and should last longer due to the lower amperage.

They used to list the hose seperately and it was $89 (US) when I purchased mine. It comes via POST.

Thank you Snoredog for the info.

I received permission from SleepZone to post their reply; looks like the power supply they send with the hose IS US approved, it's the hose that isn't. Here it is verbatim:

I'm not at all worried about it. But the DME is concerned about it, and I'm also checking because I'm not sure if the insurance company will cover it.

Also, I want to put the DME's mind at rest because I know that there are a LOT of people he supplies here in Vancouver who suffer from rainout (he said the worst months here are November to March/April), and I think I shouldn't be the only one (well, my husband) to benefit from this invention. Until I mentioned it to him, the DME had never even heard of the Aussie heated hose

Then again, why doesn't CPAP.COM carry it?

Theresa

I doubt if your insurance will cover a heated hose. I have one, but I know many people who do not need to use one because they do not have to set their humidifier at high settings and do not have any condensation problems. For several years I did not use a humidifier at all, but things have changed and I know need to use one.
