Beta Hybrid Headgear

Post by oldgearhead » Wed Aug 30, 2006 8:12 am

I have used the new headgear for a week now. It is much better than
the old one. Its just like the HC431 headgear, only with more down-pitch
on the top straps. However, no new clips. The clips have not been a problem for me. In fact I like then.

Shell - I think they must be changing the exhaust ports to accommodate ResMed xPAPs, and those RemStar users that like the mask alarm.

+ Aussie heated hose.

I have ordered a hybrid because from what I have read it would have great CO2 washout which I need because I get cluster headaches from the CO2 in normal face masks.
Does this mean that they are changing the washout ports????

Thanks,
Kurt

Not sure what they are up to ... but you should be fine if you are hoping for high CO2 washout. If it is too high, you can always plug an exaust hole or two to tweak it back down.

I think some folks were having problems maintaining correct pressures due to high washout and they were given beta replacement part to lower exhaust flows.

I personally feel, for me, the higher CO2 washout is doing me good. I'm having some problems with the hybrid as far as leaks and adjustments so I have not really been sleeping that well with it. But, surprisingly, even though I'm not sleeping as much, I don't really feel that bad. I had been using the swift. With it, it seemed like I was sleeping longer periods at a time, but not really feeling that refreshed. My hope is that if I can ever tame the hybrid and learn to sleep more hours with it, that I will be getting closer to maximium benefit from treatment.

Tim, have you been able to deterimine exactly where your leaks are coming from?

I think the high CO2 flush may be working best for folks with higher pressure settings (> about 15 cm) and those with lower pressures (< about 15 cm) may be able to optimize their results by tweaking down the CO2 flush rate ... just a working hypothesis right now though (I plan to test it in a month or so).

St. Louis - what kind of leaks are you experiencing with the hybrid. Mine are in the 100+ range - clearly unsatisfactory - no matter what I do. I'm waiting for an Innomed call back, but wondered about your experienc.

I agree with Tim. There is something about this mask that has greatly improved my therapy compared to the Swift nasal pillows/mouth taping. I suspect it is the higher CO2 washout. I may also have been aroused from sleep more with the Swift/taping due to the "chipmunk cheek" phenomenon.

If you can find a combination of the Hybrid mask size and pillow size that fits your anatomy, then you are going to have a mask that just does not leak. (I am using the mask with the chin flap removed)

I also like that it is easy to do the daily cleaning. I just pop the mask out of the shell, wash it in warm sudsy water and leave it to air dry during the day. This washes the only part that touches the face or nostrils. The shell is also easy to wash but since it doesn't touch you, I leave it for maybe once per week washing.

After a few initial days to get everything adjusted, I have used the mask about 2 weeks now without readjusting the headgear. I am using the original headgear and so far no problems.

Well I'm still working to dial in everything. There are too many combinations and permutations of how this thing can be adjusted. I think my issue is correlated to the shape of my face, which is sort of thin. I also have a prominent chin. So, even when the nose things are all the way out, It is not that easy for me to get it to seal under my chin. I think it WILL work when I figure out how to adjust all the straps to get the correct angle of everything. I mean, I can make everything very tight, which seems to work, but man it HURTS. I still have a line on one side of my face at 3:30 in the afternoon. I'm the Johnny Cash of cpap-ers. Because she's mine, I wear the line. Sorry.

Tim, why don't you cut the chin flap off. You might even be able to use a smaller size oral cushion (without chin flap) and get a more snug fit.

I've read about people doing that. That may be a last resort. I've thougth about it and before I decide to totally can this thing, I'll try the cutting off of the flap.

Also try witch hazel (available at drugstores in the first aid section) on a cloth, and put it on the line... that's what takes the mark out of mine.
