Card Reader Cannot be Detected!!

Post by krousseau » Sat Jun 10, 2006 12:03 am

Just got/everything is new:
Compaq with Windows XP
Encore Pro 1.6.22
Infineer Card Reader
Smart Card Reader/Writer 1.0

Installed encore, then reader software
Plugged in reader-get message that smart card reader can not be detected-it's 11 PM and I'm going to quit for now. If there are any night owls out there who have some ideas please send them this way.
Current plan is to follow uninstall & reinstall directions given in an Oct 05 thread on this same problem.
I have been a Mac person up to now and I'm attempting to remain calm.':?'

I would forget about installing the reader driver software before connecting your reader. The computer will detect the new hardware and ask if you have the driver software for it. When it does, then load it and see what happens.

kay, i dont see where u mentioned installing the card reader DRIVER from 2factors. it HASTA be the right one (there are several wrong ones)

look at the bottom of that page for the "Installers for EncorePro, click on that, save it to your hard drive, then run it. better yet, here is the direct link, bypassing their webpage

hope that helps.

Sound's good to me. The Wiz has done pretty everything else by itself/or told me what to do so far. I wouln't have thought of that because of the warnings not to-but all you have to do is uninstall/reinstall if it doesn't work

I installed the software that came with the reader-assumed it was on there.

Friends stopped by with their new baby during installation=maybe I missed a prompt or something oohing & aahing over baby..

...thanks...Kay

It's always advised to install the software before plugging in the hardware.
I agree that the system will do a search for the driver in most cases, but this card reader may not be 'standard', and installing the driver first may save you a lot of hassles, not to mention time from the system doing a searchl. Normal procedure is to install all drivers first, then associated software.
good luck

I have new card reader that I had not installed (my new machine is 3500 miles away awaiting collection).
So I had a go.
I plugged the reader into the USB port and the infineer reader was detected and loaded the software.
I checked on control panel and no reader was sitting anywhere.

Then I went to the CD and downloaded the DT3500 software.
Still did not show up on control panel.
Went to All Programs and the Mako file was there.
Clicked on tools - Infineer Reader Utility
A Mako technologies box came up
Select Reader showed USB on 0
Reader Status worked as it showed no card was inserted which was correct.
I pulled out USB connector and it detected it plugged it back in and it detected it.

I cant do any more as I have no more toys to play with at present.

Kay,

It could also be your USB port. Try different ports, preferrably in the back of the computer.

Ric, you are referring Kay to the 2 factors site for the card reader driver.

She bought the new version of Pro, 1.6.22 - it comes with it's own driver (on CD I assume)... Isn't that the driver she should be using? Or is the driver for 1.6.22 messed up too?

Just curious in case I ever have to try to help someone here.

I would say that Kay has the correct software already.....without going to 2factors.

This won't fully answer the question, but it might offer an important clue. Open the hardware device manager and see if the Mako card reader exists, and if it has problems.

START -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware (tab) -> Device Manager -> Smart Card Readers (expand this):

Image

And while you're there, check the USB ports, it should look something (but not exactly) like this:

Image

If those are ok, maybe be sure it's plugged directly into the computer and not by a long USB extension, that does make a difference.

I'm also not convinced the correct drivers are on the CD that came with the card reader. Mine DIDN'T have the right one and I still had to download it. Also while you're on the control panel make sure there is only ONE card reader, that has been a problem for some people. If the card reader came from Respironics I would presume they sent the correct driver. (But I wouldn't wager more than a donut hole that it is).

This little exercise won't hurt, 1) unplug the card reader, 2) from the control panel right-click on the card reader, delete it, 3) re-install the card-reader DRIVER, (not the whole bloody EncorePro application), 4) only THEN plug in the card reader, then check the control panel to make sure the reader is there and that it is working.

(something to while-away your day)

OK went though the suggestions up to Ric's first post and had to go out to run errands. Will go through today's suggections this evening and let you know -thank you everyone. I should have all the right software. Unless the driver software hasn't caught up to Encore 1.6.22.

Kay,

I'm quite sure the software driver (installer program version for Encore Pro) is the same throughout the versions.
There are other "drivers" that 2factors has available, but they are apparently for other applications.
The one I got with my Encore Pro (from CPAP.COM) is in a CD case that says: Version 1.0 and REF # 1015968.

It Is working! Thanks everyone -it may not have been your specific suggestion that finally worked-but you all kept me looking and learning about this computer & windows-it is a different system than the windows I used 10 years ago-then I only did word.

I had tried Darth's suggestion of just hooking up the reader before installing the driver-played 3 musical tones but didn't do anything else-disconnected it and it played 2 tones.

I was getting ready to follow Rics instructions but the control panel was wacko by my standards I couldn't find anything-then I noticed I cound convert the window to "Classic View"-I did-the second icon was "add hardware". Opened that, the Wiz asked me if the hardward was plugged in so I plugged it in and said yes-the Wiz took over, told me to insert the CD, installed the driver, and I was in business.

Ric-for the learning I went ahead and went through the procedure you suggested-the closest thing I found in the control panel was under PCMCIA adapters and it is a Generic CardBus Controller
