Hello all,
I did a search and couldn't find the answer. Does anyone know what "normal" is for each stage of sleep IE Stage, 1,2,3,4 and REM?
I'm sure there is a percentage bracket for each stage I would assume.
Thanks,
Malibu (Marc)
What are normal sleep stage times?

The following was posted by sleepydave on another apnea message board. He manages an accredited sleep lab and is an RT, RPSGT:

Normal sleep% are:
Stage 1 - 5%
Stage 2 - 55%
Stage 3/4 - 20%
REM - 20%
Stage 1 is only a transition state from wake to stage 2 and has no real rest value. A lot of it means inability to initiate and/or maintain sleep.
Stage 3/4 (SWS) decreases as a function of age, or if you're subject to constant arousals, as in OSA. You may still be having some SWS, but isn't scored as such because it fails to meet scoring criteria.
Sleep Architecture: These are examples of hypnograms showing sleep architecture during a full night's sleep.
my edit: sleepydave uses the nickname "StillAnotherGuest" on the cpaptalk message board.

Wow...
Thanks so much for the information.
I had 31.7 percent stage 3 and 4 after they finally figured out my pressure was to high causing EEG arousals. They moved me from 9cm to 7cm.
The sleep doc did mention rebound REM and that stage 3 and 4 would decrease back to normal however I forgot to ask what normal was since I felt really good after getting the pressure number I really needed. It has been a week and this is the best I have felt since starting CPAP January 1 of this year.
I never thought I would say that more isn't better but in my case it certainly has been the case!

So I would say that
Sleep Latency 18 Min.
Sleep Duration 380 Min.
Sleep effifciency 89%
Stage 1 NREM 9%
Stage 2 NREM 28%
Stage 3 NREM 3%
Stage 4 NREM 21%
% Stage REM 40%
Apnea hypopnea index was 74 events per hour, respiratory arousal index 68 events per hour and a total arousal index for the night of 29 events per hour.
Respitory airflow and effort measures of the initial two hours of sleep 147 events composed of 100 Obstuctive Apenas and 47 obstructive hypopneas.
Low satruation of 52% and mean saturation of 78%

Stages of sleep
Marc,
I'm glad you brought up the subject of the effect of more pressure than you need. Just recently someone asked on here if there's any harm to using higher pressure than you need. My logic would have said "No harm unless really high and causes centrals." I'm not exactly sure what an EEG arousal is or is not, but any arousal is an interruption in sleep. Good reminder to keep opinions with no facts or personal experience to support them to myself.
Patrick,
CPAP is your best friend! I know you've mentioned that you've dropped some weight. Have your pressure needs changed?
Kathy

My doctor that ordered the initial sleep study is going to order another sleep study in a couple of months she says She wants to wait until I have been on it for 18 months. Also she wants to see the card from my machine when I go in and see her in November.
