if you had a choice, which machine would you get?

Post by sister » Thu Feb 24, 2011 1:28 pm

Hi,
Well my husband finished his last sleep study Tuesday night and we are waiting to hear from the DR.
We have pretty much decided to get the S9 Autoset but would like some advice from you guys.
I have read so much that a lot of people here really like this machine.

Can I get some feedback, if this was your first machine, would you get an S9 Autoset?
I expect to hear from the DR. in a few days.
Thanks so much for your help!

I just upgraded to one a few days ago and love it. My old machine was nearing 15 years old so for me it was a major upgrade. As far as how it compares to the other new machines, I'm sure there are plenty of folks on here that can give you some additional alternatives with the differences, etc.

It's my first machine, but I love it!

Coming from 13 years on a non-data CPAP, any data-capable machine would have been an improvement, but I have not had a single regret in getting an S9 Autoset.

It's my first unit. Get it with the climate control hose line. I would buy it again if needed.

I like my S9 Autoset, but after reading the PR System One Auto manual, I think it has more functions.
It seems to be the same with the software.

Don't ask us. What do we know?

Go to https://www.cpap.com/cpap-machines/apap-machine.php and look at what it says about the percent of their sales that each machine represents.

47% DeVilbiss Intellipap
22% Resmed S9 Autoset
20% PR System One Remstar
4% Resmed S8 Autoset II
3% F&P Icon
2% Resmed S8

The rest seem to be in the low single digits. So you really have a choice between three top sellers, if that's any indication.

Compare prices and you can see one reason why the Intellipap is so popular. Then compare features and you'll find yourself asking how come the others cost so much more.

I'd get the ResMed S9 Autoset, if it were me.

Whatever brand I got, however, I would not buy an integrated heated humidifier. I'd get a separate heated humidifier -- the Fisher & Paykel HC 150 heated humidifier. Can be used with any brand of machine.

I'd not get an integrated heated hose either. I'd get a separate heated hose -- the "heated cpap tube" made by sleepzone in Australia. Or I'd use a Reptile heat cable on a standard air hose. Again, either of those can be used with any brand of machine.

I have only had Resmed Machines----First I had the Resmed Escape--good machine but no data. Then I got the S8 Elite--was a data capable machine but not adjustable in pressure. In December I got the RS9--Autoset and it is PERFECT!! Has all the data that you would want--looks like a chubby Bose System on the nightstand, and has a regular SD card---so I am def. in favor of my RESMED.

I would go with the Resmed S9 autoset with the heated hose. Its my first machine and I have been 100% complaint from day 1. It was a very easy adjustment.

I first got a Resmed S9 to use at home and later added a Respironics System One to use when travelling. So far I've only used the System One a handful of times but cannot get used to it. The mask is noisier with it, the display is hard to read, it doesn't display much therapy data and there is no way to set the time. But the thing I just can't stand is the way the CPAP/APAP system seems to urge you to inhale instead of adjusting to the way you breath as Resmed's EPR seems to do. I haven't given up on the System One yet but I'm this close.

Of the two, I'd recommend the S9.

I should hasten to say (should have said it before!) ... just because I'd choose "this one" rather than "that one" or the "other one" doesn't mean the machine I'd pick would work well for someone else. Or that it would work any better than another brand for someone else.

Some autopaps' (and bilevels') algorithms can suit one person well and not suit another person at all.
Fortunately for me, every machine I've tried so far can treat me well. Guess I'm "easy."

Since any brand seems to be able to treat me well (and comfortably), my personal choice of brand would be based (in this order) on detail of data via the LCD on the machine, detail of data shown when using software, quietness of operation, and...what I perceive (right or wrong) as a good track record for quality of manufacturing of the machine. Humidifiers are a whole other ballgame!

Thanks so very much for all the replies,we got the S9 autoset 2 days ago and my husband loves it!
He has had no problem after 2 nights and had an AHI the first night of 1.7,last night it was 1.0.

How I wish I could do that good just once, but as we all know,we are all different.
Thanks again for all your support and wonderful help in helping me decide what to do to help him.
You are a great group of people!
GOD BLESS YOU!
