The Chat Room Is Being Spammed By Numbers

The 1st line is for me entering as Mars.

As you can see, this makes the Chat Room unusable.

I have sent a PM to Carolyn, and hope she will be able to get something done about this.

If you see a stack of numbers as Chat Room visitors, then go and see for yourself. A real name is quite likely to be a fake. Madalot was supposed to be there earlier on, but was not. So be careful.

Yep -- I am supposedly in there right now, but I assure you, it's not me. But my doppleganger has figured out to use my color choice and everything.

There is no doubt that the numbers situation AND impersonating me is being done by the same person that logs in as Moderator and tries to run things in the chat room.

This is getting really stupid.

Is it that hard to authenticate username/password against the PHP chat software they are using? Argh the numbers are annoying.

This is part of the problem. The chat room does NOT require that you log in with your registered username nor does it require a password. You can log into the chat room as ANYTHING you want, even another user's registered name --

Howdy,

This situation is getting out of hand. I've put in a ticket for our chat system to pick up authentication from a logged in CPAPtalk user only and mark the rest as Guest1, Guest2, etc.

Hi Johnny

Good to hear that you are dealing with this.

But could not the same problem occur with Guest1, Guest2 etc if guests are allowed into the Chat Room.

True but at least if we see "mars" we will know that it is you and it will make the spam bots have more problems getting in.

But how do you know who Guest1 or Guest2 is.

For example, I am currently in the Chat Room as Guest3. The fact that I am registered does not prevent me from doing this.

I was supposedly in chat on Saturday night.... but wasn't and have never been. Certainly don't intend to go there either, until only registered members of this forum can have access.

Ok, I guess if there is a way of stopping trolls from using existing login names, then I'll stay away from the Chat area until that's done, so if you see my name in chat, then you know it's not me.

I have received some questions and wanted to provide clarification.

Once the chat updates are in place:
1) No one will be able to use your registered CPAPtalk name in chat
2) If you are not logged into CPAPtalk and enter chat - the system will automatically give you a name. The first person to enter chat who is not logged in will automatically receive the name "Guest1." The second person will automatically receive the name "Guest2."

Just like posting on CPAPtalk, we still want people who do not have an account with CPAPtalk to be able participate in chat. Many of you remember first coming to the forum and not quite being ready to "register" until you were more comfortable with the community and the information.

I just noticed that a new member joined today -- "Modalot" -- Seriously? This is where it's going to go now? Give me a break.

I guess because I stood up to Calist and now that Moderator idiot, I'm his main target and he is relentless in his stupidity.

I think it's time for me to take a break from this board. I'll miss my friends and miss the relationships I've established, but the fact that this has been allowed to continue to this degree - it just isn't worth it.

Moderator -- whoever you are -- congratulations. You win. I hope you choke on the victory.
