cpap software / insurance question

Post by Ric » Thu Nov 10, 2005 11:13 am

I am meeting with the DME today for the first time. My referring doc says he will write a prescription for anything I think I will need / want related to OSA. (I had the sleep study a few weeks ago).

Does insurance cover software and card readers? I'm almost afraid to ask, although I plan to get it no matter if they do or don't. I don't see it as a luxury item or a frill, seems quite useful to have and to understand what is going on, and to make adjustments to the settings. I noticed the "billmyinsurance" site doesn't even list software, which made me wonder.

OK, I could do the easy thing and just CALL them. That would be too simple. If they say no, but others on this forum got it with insurance, then I would probably be more pushy about it. If nobody gets reimbursed for this (software) then I won't even ask, I'll just buy it out-of-pocket. (I just HATE getting those rejection letters.)

Yeah, me too......

All I can say is to try it. The worst thing they can say is "NO!"
As a general rule, the insurance providers won't pay or reimburse you for it. I believe I recall one or two people on this site claiming that they DID get their insurance to pay for it, but that's definitely an exception. Anyway, paying for it out-of-pocket is a small price to pay for being able to track your therapy. Like I've said many times before, I can't imagine doing this therapy without it.

Good luck and best wishes,

Howdy,

As a rule insurance will not cover software.

I remember one cpaptalker a while back who called just about everyone at his/her insurance company and finally got a manager to auth the software. I think that person most likely spent more in effort than it would have cost to simply purchase it outright.

BillMyInsurance.com doesn't list software because it would be mean to get people's hopes up and then tell them it wasn't covered.
