Is it me or Resmed???
Re: Is it me or Resmed???
How does SmartStart affect the leak data?

Re: Is it me or Resmed???
To my knowledge, it just affects the "max leak" data. With SmartStart, you take off the mask, and the machine continues to blow for a few seconds till it shuts off. ResScan shows this as leak spikes which equal "max leak." When I turned off SmartStart, I started turning off the machine before taking off my mask. No more "max leak" spikes, and my "max leak" rates are a lot closer to the median. This way, I can see my true max leak instead of what the machine blows before it detects that my mask is off (and thus turns off the machine). For example, when I was using SmartStart, I had max leaks from 24-48L/min at 10cm. Last night, my max leak was 7.2L/min, while the median was 6.0L/min. SmartStart is convenient, but until I get my numbers consistently low, I'll probably leave it off.jdm2857 wrote:How does SmartStart affect the leak data?

TwoKat--
Thanks. I figured that the machine was smart enough to not include those last few seconds in the calculations.
But I guess SmartStart is also NotQuiteSmartEnoughStop.
You could also use SmartStart to start, and press Stop before removing the mask. I may try that.

jdm,
Do you use leak adjustment by holding the start button for 3 secs? I found it helps with AutoSet. Otherwise you will adjust the mask for the lower pressure and when the pressure goes up leaks happen.
atab.

Yeah, I solved that problem by using the Liberty mask... masks that cover the mouth can't use smartstart. YAY!jdm2857 wrote:TwoKat--

Can the algorithm for this machine be that different?....
or does it just fit me better than the Mseries does???
It takes but a few minutes and I am in sync w/the
machine and I can't hardly tell I have a mask on.
Whatever it is, I'm lov'n this machine.
Bottom line, best night of sleep I have had.

Seriously, though......I'm glad to hear your therapy is better with your new machine.
But, yes, the algorithms are different and some people find the differences between them will give them different therapy results, or so I've read.

With Slinky and now Carbonman championing their cause I guess Respirionics might as well roll up and go out of business!!! Maybe the new "Q" Series will save the company but don't anyone hold their breath!!!

Re: Is it me or Resmed???
My 2 cents:
It may be other things about the machine (quietness, nature of exhalation relief, etc) moreso than the algorithm. Or it could be you would have had some good weeks on the Respironics and got even better numbers and better rest with it--there are so many variables in our lives beyond the ones we choose to measure, and sometimes timing makes all the difference.
On the other hand, . . .
ResMeds, I understand, are slow to lower pressure and don't test the pressure like Respironics autos do. It may be that you get disturbed by the tests, and that the slow reduction in pressure with the ResMed means your average pressure is a little higher on that machine on the whole during the night. That part of how the machines' approaches differ may be part of the difference in how you feel.
You may have to switch back and forth a few times if you want to be super-scientific about it.
Or you can just choose to enjoy good nights of sleep.
I would probably vote the latter, myself.

I hear so many people rave about APAPs. I'm on a CPAP and get mostly good numbers but am left wondering, apart from the numbers is there anything else that would make me feel better if I went from my Elite II to an APAP?
By good mostly good numbers i mean AIs of 0.1-0.3 and AHI's 5-7

Mseries auto using cflex. Typical numbers were fewer H and more A. Generally averaged AHI of 2.Uncle_Bob wrote:Carbonman may I ask what machine were you one before? and what numbers were you getting?
I was comfortable w/that machine. I was surpirsed by last nights numbers because with the Resmed,
typically, so far, the H's push my AHI way above what I was typically w/the Mseries.
So, lower numbers w/the Resmed just confirmed how I slept last night and how I feel today.
As I have said before, I want the total cpap experience....
PS I still contend that the BRICK needs love, too.

I think you are right again.
My guess is the difference in the way the pressure is handled.
I have switched between the two machines.
Two nights the power was out and two nights camping.....BUT,
those were unsual circumstances to my normal sleep hygiene.
.....more of those variables in our lives beyond the ones we choose or CAN measure.
I will switch back to the M and use it in a "normal" situation.
Good point.
....and yes, you are right again.....
man I hate it when that happens.....
....since using this machine, I have backed off what the numbers say
and really focus on how do I feel.

Re: Is it me or Resmed???
I know the Autoset, and probably the others in the S8 line, lower the pressure over a 20 minute period, as long as it doesn't ramp up again due to AH events... If your HI is 4, you're having 4 events per hour, which basically means once every 20 minutes, or as soon as the air pressure gets down to a certain level, then it starts going back up. I think the main idea with the APAP is to give your body a break between events to breathe against something less than gale-force winds, and to only use the pressure that's actually needed to correct the event each time it happens.
