Swift loud noise fix....

Post by TheMamaLisa25 » Sat Jul 09, 2005 9:59 pm

Hello I am new to this board. I am only 25 years old but have played around with different masks and haven't been sucessful in 5 years due to not being able to tolerate masks. Well when I found the Swift I was able to comply all night long ! One problem was it would wake me up at night with a loud wooshing noise. I was so diappointed . I thought maybe I didn't reassemble it right because it was quiet when I fell asleep the noise started about 2-3 hours in. So I cleaned it real well and put it back together again carefully this time. Well that night it made that darn air leak sound. Well under close inspection I found where the leak was! The ends snap on with clips. If you look at the end of where it snaps on the slits go all the way to the edge. Well when your head puts tension on the headgear it pulls the plastic piece apart just enough to barely expose the slit letting air leak out. Figured if I could just cover that slit enough so air would no longer escape the noise would hopefully stop. I am very poor so I wrapped the end in scotch tape but left the end open so it would still snap in place. Ever since that night I have yet to hear that noise except if blankets or my pillow get in the way. Hope this helps someone get a better nights rest!

Good tip, Lisa! Glad you're getting better sleep now, and found your way to the message board.

I would really like to try this on my Swift. Exactly where do you put the tape?
The only problem I have with my Swift is the noise. So would love to know where to put the tape. Sorry, but I really didn't understand from your post. Thanx for the info that it can be fixed tho.

ellie, I think that what Lisa was describing is at either end of the horizontal cylinder. The cap didn't fit securely enough to stay tight there if the side piece of the headgear tugged on it.

Most people who complain of noise from the Swift, however, are referring to the loud sound of the exhaust port...a different problem altogether. Or sometimes the complaint is about the whooshy sound of air moving through any of the Swift's tubes.

Some people have reported quietening their Swifts by placing a small bit of mesh inside the cylinder. I tried the mesh trick with mine, but couldn't tell much difference in the loud exhaust sound.

Swift fixes

I use the Swift regularly. I use teflon plumber's tape around the place where the end cap plugs in to take care of that leak.

And I use mesh stuffed inside for THAT sound.

Its an ok interface, at least until I something comes along that works better for me. I alternate with the Activa, but really like to be able to scratch my nose with the Swift.

Swift fixes

Sorry I told you I was bad a describing things.... Anyways Like the previous poster said I wrap the tape around the ends that plug in but stop just before the lip of the end so it will still click in. Sorry its the best description I could think of. I have found that the ports do make some nosie as well but dont seem to bother me. My boyfreind mentioned it but I thought maybe he was just complaining, lol. Well I hope the idea will help others

Unless you have a faulty mask, these plugs shouldn't come out that easily. I've never had that happen with mine. You have to be sure you push them in until they "click".

And your headgear shouldn't be so tight that it would pull them out. The headgear is supposed to be loose. Read the instruction booklet and view the CD that come with the mask.

You're a smart wise 25 year old. I'm going to be 55 and it took me these 6-77 mos. to figure out that that's where I'm hearing my leaking sounds as well. Always I will defer to someone younger to figure it out quickly! GOod for you! How I resolved this was using a whole new swift band/hosing/nasal pillow. I kept the old whoosher for a back up just in case.

Also, something that I notice, I do or it moves when I turn on my side on the pillow, the flat long piece that holds the whole nasal pillow together, i guess we could call it the ''holder on-er'' piece, well it slides easily back and forth to take the n. p. apart, and I have discovered that it slides ever so slightly and I find leakage coming from there.

HELLO SWIFT MAKERS, ARE YOU READING THIS?

Good job on helping yourself and all of us!

Try positioning the plug with the tab up and see if that stops the leaking. I had the same thing happen last night for the first time and I did that, which is the usual position I have it in and it stopped.

leaking mask

I am a new user, 6 months, and was given a gel mask. It worked great and I have used it every night, all night since day one. It's time for a new one but the new one I received seems to have that loud wooshing sound described by gailzee. The sound is coming from the connections to the hose or where the "exhaust" breath is exiting. I have returned the mask twice but all the replacements have a version of the wooshing breathing sound which keeps me awake. I keep going back to my original mask which is quiet but pretty skunky by now. Any suggestions, is there something I should do? I have formed the mask to my face but that is not where the leaking is coming from. Thanks for any suggestions.

Swift mask leak

Post by TheMamaLisa25 » Wed Jul 13, 2005 5:21 pm

Yeah I thought the mask might be defective. It doesnt pull out on its own though all the way. Just ever so slightly.... (enough to cause a leak). Also the head gear is not too tight I just have high cheek bones and kind chubby cheeks. I have tried putting the holes up but it still leaks and even with the tape it still clicks in. I also watched that darn movie over and over thinking I did somthing wrong but havent found my error yet. In my opinon this is the most comfortable mask I have used but it needs a small bit of tweaking to fix minor details (like everything)! Sleep Well All!

Hey, all. I need a YES or a NO. I am just about done with the Activa due to six weeks of leaks that wake me up every night no fail at least two to five times. I have tried mole skin in all different locations on my face and every conceivable setting of straps and adjustments known to man with this mask and there is no way to stop the leaks. Maybe it's the bone structure of my face, but that's the way it is. My RT said to go for the Swift, that he's had people call him and thank him for recommending it since it's virtually leak-free and people seem to love it. But after reading all these complaints about noises coming from every which way, I now am rethinking spending money on another mask which will cause more grief. I wasted money on the Oracle and have suffered the past six weeks with trying to get the Activa, two of them, to work for me. Now with the Swift, I might be making the same mistake, only due to noise that may be unfixable.
So is it a YES or a NO? Go for it or keep searching?
