"Smartcard reader not detected"

Post by Dgrendahl » Mon Oct 15, 2007 6:34 am

OK, I know that this topic has been dealt with in other places. I have gone and read them all. And, I still am having the difficulty. What I'm hoping here for is that someone since has come up with the foolproof way of getting this resolved. All I have done so far is to install the software, "Encore 1.8.49" and I have the "INFINEER" card reader. I did not install the driver that came with the reader however. I was told not to. When I check the devices it is shown...my computer recognizes it. The program doesn't. Are their any wise computer geeks out there who have the answer to this problem? Thanks!

Card Reader Drivers

Post by DreamDiver » Mon Oct 15, 2007 7:17 am

Remove your card reader.

On winxp, navigate to the device manager:
Right click on 'My Computer' on the desktop.
Pull down to Properties. A dialog box will appear.
Go to "Hardware" tab. Click on "Device manager"
A new dialog box will appear.
Scroll down to "Smart Card Readers"
In the subfield, right click and uninstall the existing driver.

Get out your install disk out and open it without autoplay.
Navigate to the card reader driver installer.
Double click on it. It should install the drivers
Disregard any installer warnings.

Close all windows.

Plug in your card reader without the card in it.
Your computer should automatically
recognize the card reader and implement the drivers
successfully.

From there you should be able to use your card reader.
You may need to reboot.

Hopefully, that should do the trick.

If you need a more explicit recipe, please PM me, and I'll get to it after errands and work if someone else doesn't help you first.

For Vista

Post by DreamDiver » Mon Oct 15, 2007 8:40 am

If you've already plugged in your card reader in Vista and it's not reading, here are instructions for doing it properly.

To access Device Manager, go to Start start menu | Control Panel | System and Maintenance | System | Device Manager (Device Manager is located under "Tasks" in the left hand column of the "System" menu). A list of hardware will display.

Assuming your smart card is plugged in (you won't see it if it's not):
Scroll down until you see "Smart Card Readers"
Select the smart card reader that is installed under that heading.
Right click on it and pull down to "uninstall."

What are you doing this? To remove any current smart card drivers so you can start with a fresh install.

Next make sure your smart card reader is removed from the computer.

Reboot.

Get out your install CD for the Encore Pro Software.
Open it by right clicking on the CD icon from your "My Computer" window.
Disregard and exit the autorun feature.
Navigate to the folder "Smart Card Reader" on the CD.
There you should see a set of Vista install instructions as a pdf.

Drag it to your desk top and open it.

They are fairly standard instructions for installing a wayward driver. If you follow them explicitly and patiently, you should have it installed in a few minutes.

You also have to go into the Encore Pro program, and set it to use the USB reader, their programmer is from the middle ages, not middle aged. Jim
