Never trust unsolicited advice given by PM!

Post by ozij » Sat Oct 16, 2010 8:27 am

Recently a newbie on the forum has recieved a PM from someone too ashamed to post in public, telling her basically not to use the advice she found here.

viewtopic/t56442/viewtopic.php?p=529502#p529502

To all newbies:
Should anyone, ever approach you with any kind of advice by PM, unsolicited by you - bring it out in public. You have no reason to trust anyone on this forum -- but when things are discussed in public, you have many opinions about them, and mistakes can be caught by watchful eyes. Nobody is infallible -- no matter what their purported profession. Take care, use your critical thinking, and never accept candies from strangers...

Hi Oz,
I logged on this morning with a PM from that person as well! I immediatley foed him/her. I didn't even waste my time on clicking the link. The message also implied I am a newbie LOL! If calist would have taken the time to check my join date, it is VERY clear I am an oldie. I am also educated about TROLLS and NOT the hairy kind either!

Calist, Whatever you are pushing could you please move on to another forum or an island is even a better choice. Do NOT pm me again, or I will have to call the Cpaptalk police!

Susan

I would also like to say that I have received several PM's asking me who Calist is, CLAIMING that they have received PMs advising them to look elsewhere for help on their situations. The reason I am being asked is because I am listed on Calist's signature.

Ozij is absolutely correct that any unsolicited PM should NOT be taken seriously unless the information contained within it is thoroughly investigated.

I personally found this situation borderline amusing, but it's becoming obvious that there is an attack not only on members here, but on the site itself.

Wow --

Thank you for adding your info, Susan. I wasn't aware of that, it was posted while I was composing my message to forumadmin. Makes me wonder who else has been contacted like this by the purported sleep tech.

from another recent post here-

I also received a very nice PM from a different person actually offering me his backup machine since I was having trouble with mine! (though I declined since my problem was from using the mask wrong.) I appreciate this site very much.
Helpful1 -
fwiw I think the DS100 you show in your equip listing does not provide ANY data. Data is extremely useful in finding the problems we all seem to go thru when using cpap machines.

On another note -
Those who knew or remember Snoredog (RIP), knew he was rough around the edges but here is a quote I long remember from him -
  • Snoredog wrote:In PM's there is NO one to scrutinize that bad advice to indicate otherwise. In public, if I suggest something that isn't quite kosher, you can be assured there will be someone else to come along like -SWS, dsm or SAG to let not only me but more importantly YOU know it isn't right. SO in a PM you lose that scrutiny and doing so can even be dangerous. It is why I generally make it policy NOT to discuss these items in private PM's, no one learns and you get better suggestions.

Said another way -
  • Snoredog wrote:That is your own fault for using PM's to resolve your problem, it doesn't fall under the scrutiny of others to correct if it wrong or bad advice.

If everyone did everything via PM's no one would learn anything from it.

He contacted me as well and sent me to that Binary Sleep place. I went there but didn't really read any of their postings. I love the format of CPAPTalk.com and respect everyones opinion. I have a GREAT doctor right now and as you can see from my update post my therapy has really helped me. If things ever go bad with him I am glad that there is a place like this out here. Keep up the great work!!!

binarysleep is a forum designed for sleep professionals to use. I don't think it's an appropriate place for cpap users ("patients") to start posting questions or comments. It surprises me that calist thinks it would be a good idea for cpap users to post there. I don't think his suggestion would go over well with the other members of binarysleep.

I agree completely, rested gal. This forum geared towards patients and binarysleep is geared towards sleep professionals. They should have a place where they can commiserate with each other and feel free to vent and complain. If a bunch of patients go there, many of them may feel that they can't function in that forum the way they have in the past. I'd hate think that this nonsense going on here could negatively influence yet another site. That would be sad.

I have been lucky to have been avoided /avoid this Troll. I have read his posts and believe that He is attacking the community here. Maybe if we all ignore him he will go away. I have done thus far in fear of me loosing my temper and punching my computer which I can't aford to replace.

Hey Jabman - don't deprive yourself of much needed relief.

A baseball bat, a few heavy pillows, a bit of space, clear the area of children - and go for it.

And afterwards, as you relax and feel good about yourself, you still have a computer
